Greatest 'Zep Album of All? (aka can of worms thread)

Morning chaps (and lady chaps of course).

For me the greatest Zep' album is II, however if II had Immigrant Song on it in replace of that god awful love song (something about mountains falling in the sea etc..yawn) then it would, for me, probably be the best rock album.

Just wondered what you people thought?

They're ALL great in various ways and I for one just cannot express a favourite, since each album expresses a different facet to the uniqueness of the band and the times they were experiencing :)

The track on II you refer to is just how I felt (and still very much feel if truth be told ;)) in the early days of my relationship with wifey (groan - pass the sick bucket :lol:). It definitely has its place there IMO.

The one Zep LP that took me a couple of years to "get" was Houses Of The Holy, where Plant's voice was artificially raised even higher in pitch than usual :) I mean, "The Crunge" FFS. Once I'd got the vibe and humour contained within them grooves, I loved it.

It would have been wonderful had Planty agreed to a tour after the 2008 O2 gig. Jason Bonham seemed to do a fantastic job in reverence to his departed Dad and they seemed to have a good time on stage. They don't need the money, but the sense of love and friendship with the audience would have been palpable I reckon and rather better than the Page/Plant gigs in the 90's (those two should NEVER discount the contribution of JPJ and Bonzo :))

I couldn't agree more with that ... With the exception of their last, I find all the albums indispensable.

I do find there is something very satisfying about Houses of the Holy. Whilst it doesn't contain their very best songs I think that as an album it just works for me from start to finish.

Physical Graffiti for me got the old unremastered double cd for christmas back in the 90's cost £26.99..:eek: still have it but prefer to play the vinyl these days. I love all their albums appart for In Through the Out Door and the posthumous Coda...Led Zepp I is special too but took me quite a while to ''get''...

Definitely Zep One for me, but only just, then descending in order of appearance. One and Two would definitely feature in my Desert Island Discs, but I sort of lost interest after Four

Have to disagree about Ramble On. It's tracks like that and Battle Of Evermore on Four that stop them from being just another heavy metal band. There's folk in their roots as well as blues, and that give their rock a whole extra dimension compared with the rest.

As stated earlier anything other than ITTOD, or CODA...it all depends on my mood I think.

As Jack White once said...'Never trust a man who doesn't like Led Zeppelin' ;)

Page & Plant played an excellent gig at '95 Glastonbury, with Jason Bonham, and an Egyptian orchestra (think Kashmir)...rather blew the subsequent Oasis into the weeds...

I, II and Phys Graf are my favourites - but II comes top of them all - Jimmy Page cast black magic spells on it to make it sound so good(allegedly:eyebrows:). IV I got into whilst at college so have a soft spot for that one too - Anythime I hear Battle of Evermore it still makes me think of those many hours spent getting wasted on industrial strength hashish and cheap red wine...those were the days:D

"I Can't Quit You Babe" from Coda is amazing, whatever the format it's mastered to. Played on the big ATC's LOUDLY it was incredible. Short of being at the mixing desk, I doubt it could be much better :)

The tragedy was that apparently, after a few years being a bit out of it and overshadowed by the Punk/New Wave explosion, Zep were well on the way back to form and possibly getting a bit funky with it I understand.

I know you are only kidding about the Greatest Hits album, but I have to say that after a long while of not wanting to listen to Led Zep, I was given a live album, How The West Was Won, and it reignited my obsession.

Number 1 for me... I'm a bass player and the fast bit on Dazed and Confused when Bonzo and Jones lock in tight always gives me goosebumps!
