Womens Omnium now in progress at the velodrome.
If you've not seen GBs Laura Trott ride an Elimination Race (the last of the first day's three events in the Omnium), then make sure you watch tonight. The object of the race is to avoid being the last rider across the line every other lap - the last rider is eliminated each time until there are just two left. Laura's usual tactic is to ride round at the back and just accelerate at the very last second to avoid being last. It's real edge of the seat stuff! It'll probably be the last race of the track session tonight.
Kenny and Pendleton tonight, still doing the business. Excellent, both of them.

Another Gold in the cycling - well done Laura Trott - and what a nailbiter that was!
Fab - as well as the Triathlon and Dressage golds (my sister will be pleased, she's a dressage instructor and judge).
I can hardly watch Pendleton... that was close! COME ON VICKY!

Call me a bad loser, but that was a shallow victory for Meares. Very well ridden race by her and she deserved to win that one, but it should be 1 - 1 :(
Yes, agreed, but it does seem that the commissaires are abiding by the letter of the rules and obviously Meares' earlier shove didn't count :(
Nevertheless, Pendleton got a gold and a silver and I'm glad for her.

Got my fingers crossed for Beth Tweddle today , would love to see her finally get a medal on the uneven bars ! Comon Beth .
That was absolutely freakin' amazing!!! The only way that routine could have been more difficult was if she was aligning a cartridge on a fixed headshell arm at the same time without a protractor. I think I would have given her the gold regardless of the landing. That was the sickest thing I've seen in a long time. :)

The Real McHoy and it was almost as exciting watching his Mum as it was the race, she must be very proud (and very relieved!).
Amazing stuff from Laura Trott and Chris Hoy. So sad for Victoria; I really thought the fairytale ending was going to happen. That commissaire certainly ain't going to be on her Christmas card list :steam:

I suspect Taoufik Makhloufi will be the subject of much speculation - and a drugs test after that 1500m win! Very bizarre.
Much was said by the commentators on the BBC transmission concerning Pendleton crossing the red line due to Meares sticking the elbow in. In fact, if one watches the incident in slow motion, Pendleton crosses the red line before the incident and Meares lifts her elbow to stop Pendleton running into her. This is why she was penalised. Had this not happened I think Pendleton would have stood a better chance of gold.
Hmmm, I've watched it countless times and I just don't see it that way at all :scratch:

Me too John, hardly played anything at all the last 2 weeks. Anytime I'm not at work, I'm mostly glued to the TV - but I'm like this every Olympics. Can't wait for the next one, as I will be retired and can watch the whole thing :)
I forcibly turned the TV off last night to play music, but it was hard.
Don't talk to me about Olympic tickets, grrrr :steam:
I've been glued to it whenever I can - I've even been watching it on my iPod Touch using TVCatchup (which is a brilliant free TV app - http://www.tvcatchup.com/) which has all the 24 BBC Olympic channels available, so even if I'm doing something else I can still keep tabs on it...

Yes she has won the world title at this event , shame about the landing but I think she was delighted with a bronze , the American girl gave a great performance too !

Not yet but I have tickets and will report back. I couldn’t get anything I went for in the Olympics so went for the best Paralympics instead. I think it was a good move as there seems to be more of a buzz around the Paralympics this time, the standard is getting so much better and the coverage is more on a par too, Channel 4 should do quite well out of it.
I’ve got tickets to see the 100 men’s final in the same disability bracket as Oscar Pistorius so I’m hoping to witness a little bit of history being forged by the Blade Runner. Hopefully a landmark event and also a great chance to see the park while it’s still in it’s full use. I really want to go and see all the waterways and meadow areas which I know the garden’s went to real effort to bloom at the right time. I’m quite excited really.
Whatever age the person is, put them on a BMX bike and they immediately look 12 years old.
Can't really get excited about BMX as an Olympic sport, so I'm giving it a miss until 7.00 tonight and the athletics - it will be nice to play some music in the meantime :)
I think it'll be quite exciting when they are flying around the BMX track eight abreast. Rather them than me.

Just been watching Taekwondo. Sign by the mat says WTF. I couldn't have put it better.
Huge shock in the men's volleyball - Italy beat defending olympic champions and favourites USA 3-0 in the semi-finals :stalks:
Big up Nicola Adams - what a lovely girl - that you wouldn't mess with! ;) A well deserved Gold. Well done Katie Taylor getting Ireland's first Gold, in the women's boxing too. :) Mustn't forget Charlotte Dujardin in the dressage either.
200m mens final was awesome - Bolt a legend - and David Rudisha breaking the 800m record was also awesome!

Just seen 19 year old Jade Jones win her Gold for Taekwondo - you go girl!
Can't believe how into this Olympics I've got! GB rules!
The Taekwondo was exciting to watch, too. Well done Jade Jones!
Sorry if it's been said before but Yorkshire competitors have claimed more than the anticipated portion of the medals (pro-rata to the population) - and more than countries like Australia and Japan. It is God's country after all!! :lol: :lol: ;) .

It has certainly been an Olympics to remember. I shall never see Team GB perform as well again, so I salute them one and all.

Not according to the American media , there medal table has GB in 4th behind Russia with S Korea even further down ? Based on medals won , so in theory a team can win 100+ bronze medals with no golds and yet top the table ? I think that's crap and maybe to ensure team USA top the table ahead of China or as in bad old days , ahead of the former Soviet Union , bit sad really.
The US always do that, ignore the official Olympic table to get themselves at the top! I used to frequent a US computer forum and got myself into trouble during the Beijing Games for mentioning this very same thing.
Anyway, what about the Marathon? How many people have turned out in London to watch it . . . staggering and I have never seen so many people watch a Marathon before. A fitting end to a very successful games, both for the standard of the sport but also the atmosphere and support from the British public.
A roaring success I think :)

No surprise there, surely? It's the American way to try to influence everything, with varying degrees of success, such that the end result is to their benefit. As currently the only world super-power, who can blame them, but the fun will start when our friends in the east really begin to flex their muscles, a process that has only just begun.

I must admit to being very surprised at the number of gold medals & medals in total that GB has won though :D I honestly thought that we'd manage less than twenty all told :scratch:

Martin, I rather doubt the decline of the USA to less than a super-power in your time span of 10 years but I would not rule it out longer term :) .

I know you don't have broadcast TV, Mark, but you owe it to yourself to buy the first Olympics compilation on Blu-ray as soon as it's available. There were many spectacular and emotional moments. Great, great viewing.

Was that Bebel Gilberto in the Brazilian segment ? She is fantastic and well worth checking out as I think she is probably the closest Brazil has to an internationally known singer.

For goodness sake, who asked him to represent British culture? I did the appropriate thing: went for a leak when he appeared, then topped up my glass with 16 year old Laphroaig malt whisky.
I thought the whole closing ceremony was dreadful really and was pretty much what I had (wrongly) feared the opening ceremony would be like.
The only good bit for me was the lowering of the couldron and the subsequent 'phoenix' section.
Eric Idle was great and The Who were OK, I suppose.

Why are the Yanks allowed to run their own system when everyone else uses the Gold Medal first table? Must be the World series Baseball / American Football mentality. All US sports are world championships even though practicaly knowone else plays them. :) Makes no difference as they come top anyway you measure it.
As for the concert. A quote from my tonge in cheek post on SH forum. Missed Mr Brand out but he is not worth mentioning anyway.

It started fairly well with Madness and Elbow were great - nobody appears to have mentioned them. Also Ray Davis nailed it. Emilie Sande at least has a great voice.
Then some Who impersonators - I didn't recognise them as the Kaiser Chiefs either.
Kate Bush? - Not In person Running Up That Hill new version? - sounded like the old version to me.
Pink Floyd? Oh well Dave Mason and Friends (One member of Genesis). Ed Sherrin did competent vocal but why as he is not known worldwide? Liked the tightrope walkers turning into the burning man WYWH cover image.
Annie Lennox and George Micheal passable filler performances.
Then degenerates into cool R&B show for the kids - not. Tinie Tempa s**t ! Now Jessie appears to be taking over the show.
Fat Boy Slim doing an impression of a DJ ! Oh isn't that what he used to do before becoming Mr Zowie Ball ? (Zowie is a UK radio and TV personality).
Commentator said it was like a disco - must be nearly as old as me then?

Then two guys who actualy are Queen Imitators with err Jessie. Yes of course this is the Jessie Jay show not Olympics closing. Oh well she has a pretty good voice but 'We Will Rock You' is Queen's most annoying song.
Oh well back to the ceremonies - Brazilians doing their thing - about to put flame out - is this the end of the Music ?
No here's Take That. I remember hating them in the 90's but this performance has saved the show. No Robbie but who cares.

Yes it's The Who but they are supposed to be rubbish now. Daltrey sounds in fine voice. Great stuff. Not bad for a bunch of old men. They Nailed it. Phew I wasn't watching the Jessie Jay show after all.

I liked the Closing Bash for the light effects and the incredible cauldron - that really is a hard act to follow.
Musically it was total crap from beginning to end *. At the least the athletes seemed to be enjoying it, so since it was their party that's ok. :)

Did anyone catch the mistake at the end of the show where some numpty restarted the tape of the so-called live performances? The hilarious bit was when said numpty obviously realised what they had done and in their panic attempted to stop it but instead launched it into accelerating playback which became more comedic the faster it got... Priceless... :lol:
So much good music could have been selected, a wasted opportunity really. But then, it represents the tastes of the masses so I guess I'm in the minority.
I will at least grudgingly admit that Jessie J sang well with Queen. She has a good voice, if not good songs normally. Mind you, what she was wearing was an affront :eek:

I only stuck it out on the off chance that Kate might appear...... but overall I was underwhelmed (apart from Eric Idle's Angels :stalks:)

Eric Idle was brilliant, I wish he would do a TV show. The sound levels were not right, vocals were swamped by the music.

Everyone involved didn't need such a performance to let their hair down and celebrate - I'm sure they all had their own plans for that well sorted by then :lol:.
I believe it was intended as a showpiece of an aspect of Britain to impress the rest of the world viewing on TV and they chose 'Music' (in the main). No problem with that, our musical performers enjoy world wide recognition and are something that much of the world wide audience has some knowledge and experience of but OMG the interpretation and implementation of that choice was woeful in the extreme IMHO.
Best forgotten and just try to remember the Opening Ceremony which was a good as the Closing one was bad :) .

I do take your point Alex, but I think it was trying to be something it wasn't and I have never really enjoyed a party I didn't go too ;)
I think the best bits were actually not the 'staged' bollocks that was going on, but what the athletes were doing, which was much more entertaining and I could have just watched them instead of flying prima ballerina's and Russell bloody Brand. They were great (the athletes) and their antics completely outshone what was happening around them - so much more human and heart warming than a bunch of has been 'pop' stars acting out a script.
But I did like Eric Idle's Angels by the way :eyebrows:

I feel the closing ceremony is as forgettable as The Games (and opener) are memorable. What a fantastic two weeks in the middle of doom and gloom Britain. My grumpy old cynicism was well and truly dispelled for the duration - we did the world proud (after all), and a couple of naff hours at the end can't change that.
