Going ov to Napster.......?

Given the SBT related problems, which seem to be Spotify borne, I'm considering Napster.

I have a mate who runs it with no problem at all on his Logitech device , not the Touch though.

Any thoughts gents?

Napster is cheaper, and should work OK. Check out your choice of music is available. For me I now think Napster is a better deal and the SQ is OK. If you're really picky then neither Napster nor Spotify is good enough. Many pop artists do not feature on these services though, and there's considerable overlap between Spotify and Npster.

No, but shortly after you had wisely guided me with that Web address with the dotted t''s and crossed T's, it stopped working,maying it could not access the server!

I did put it at the end of the posts we had exchanged a week or so back, but you can't have seen it!:confused::confused::(

Doesn't it depend on whether you take the mobile option? If you don't want it for an iPod, iPad or other mobile device I think Napster is cheaper. I hope so, otherwise I'm paying more than I thought. You didn't say you wanted mobile as well. With Spotify the Premium service does include the mobile capability - just checked it still works on my iPad. I think you'll find Napster SQ is also good enough if Spotify is acceptable for you, though it might vary from track to track.

if you can afford it I'd suggest giving it a tryout, though I'm afraid I have both - but not the mobile Napster. I think it's now a toin coss job if you only want one and you want mobile. If you don't need mobile then I still think Napster is cheaper, but my earlier comments about what's available still apply.

For classical music now that Napster has been updated with Rhapsody, there's a very good range of music/performances available, and although there's a very considerable overlap with Spotify, there are things on each one that are not on the other. Pop music enthusiasts may find that what they really want is not on either.

Is this the link http://192.168.2.6:9000 ?

If so, is the laptop on and connected to your network?
I expect the answer to be yes.

You can check the IP address of your serving machine (laptop) to see if it has shifted from 192.168.2.6 to 192.168.2.? - if this IP address has shifted then that would explain why you can't access the server with the address at the top of the page.

Another thing you can do is go to the player itself and see which server it is connected to under "My Music/Switch Server" - that should give you further clues.

Am I correct in thinking my laptop needs to be on to be able to let the iPad work with that link? If so, it is, but it isn't connecting to the link, just about to see if the IP has changed.......firstly, when you quote My Music/Switch Server, do you mean Switch Source? If so it is on "New HP" which is the laptop. the IP address looks like it has changed, to 192.168.2.10

If you enter http://192.168.2.10:9000 into a web browser on your iPad then you should see LMS . It will work on the laptop (or any other computer on the network) too.
You'll need to get iPeng to search out LMS at its current location too.

The IP address changing would explain your access issues.

As to why IP addresses change you're better off asking MartinT.

Once again Chris, you have come to my rescue, now whether the bloody thing decides to change IP addys I dont know, but at this moment in time, its there on the iPad!

I don't use iPeng myself, but I would be very surprised if it didn't have a "search for server" function.

Is there's anybody out there using iPhone and iPeng who would care to chip in?

Are you running via your own server or using a connection direct through squeezebox.com? I don't have a Touch, but I do have a Classic, and it works fine with squeezebox.com. Surely the Touch should as well!

With my model I can't get Spotify except via the local server and Triode's plug in, though that does usually work OK. I can manage all of these with IPeng and Squeezepad, though sometimes they do go a bit odd.

I thought Napster only did a maximum bitrate of 160kbps, which for me isn't good enough. Spotify (Premium) at 320kbps is tolerable for casual listening and discovering new music before purchase, but I couldn't live with 160 personally.

Has Napster uprated their service?I think they now use 256kbps AAC, following the merger/takeover by/with Rhapsody. It's still compressed, but a lot better than earlier, and many might not be able to tell the difference between this and Spotify. Sometimes it just depends on the quality of the original recording and/or the care taken in the digital compression - it's not just a bit rate thing. A lousy compression at 320 kbps could sound worse than a good one at 192 kbps, though below 192 kbps most things start to go off.

Managed to get the Iomega NAS all up and running via the laptop and thought all is well!
But no, for whatever reason I now keep getting an error message saying the Touch can't find the server!!!!!!

Have any IP addresses changed?
Have you gone through the "My Music/Change Server" routine to see which server it's going for?

Chris, you mention 'my music/ change server' but mine only says change library......or, when it lets me do it, I can alter the music source, ie from 'new HP' etc. Are we on the same song sheet?
