Found this on you tube.

Needs to be listened to on headphones, no point listening on speakers as the effect wont work.

Listen somewhere quiet with no distracting sounds leaking in.

Plug your headphones in, check the Youtube on screen volume is maximum, turn your headphone volume up a bit more than usual, press play and close your eyes and imagine you are in the barbers chair in an old fashioned barbers shop.

The sound positioning is excellent, they are very sharp scissors

Remember to close your eyes and listen.

Made me smile :)

Bruel & Kjaer used to have a similar demo set in their factory in Denmark, where you sat in a barber's chair, in front of a mirror etc, but wearing headphones. The original high quality recording had been done using a pair of their own binaural microphones, and the result was uncanny.

Excellent!

There's better imaging and placement on that than most CDs I own.

Amazing!

(Must dig out that 3D60/binaural Orb/Gilmour CD version of Metallic Spheres I've never played...)

I have blood dripping from my ear. Are you sure this is virtual?

That prompted a search for something from way back when. We used this to sell loads of pairs of Sennheiser HD414s in the early 70s. Because the great British public in those days had very little exposure to headphones, this came as a bit of a revelation to most people, and a sale was almost guaranteed. One guy however looked profoundly unimpressed, and was obviously baffled by my waffling on about the natural soundscape and so on. It was only after he left (without a pair of headphones) that I noticed the mono button was pressed in on the amp I was using...

Not heard this since 1976 until today. I never noticed before how creepy the commentator is!

Best auditioned with open-back 'phones, but an interesting effect with ear-buds as well.

this impressive example is part of Dr. Chesky’s sensational, fantastic, and simply amazing binaural sound show (https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetail&valbum_code=090368035561).

Hi Werner,

Found this: http://gizmodo.com/5844613

You wouldn't happen to know how I could get this kind of "headphone effect", do you? I'd be ever-so grateful.

Kind Regards,
Stephen

no, unfortunately I’m not aware of a person or a company offering this kind of “tuning” to headphones. Taste and style of course are very personal things, but I never understood why “woodyfying” headphones is that popular in North America. Wood is a wonderful material, but in my opinion not well suited for headphones.

I have to presume Werner that you were responding to the link itself and not the thumbnail Stephen included..... ;)

yes, of course! I don’t think a grown up man would have any troubles in knowing how to experience that certain “headphone effect” Stephen included in his picture.

If only you knew, Werner. . . If only you knew. . . The image appeals to my sense of humour so might use it as an avatar.

If there was anywhere in the U.S.A. I'd look for the "woodyfying phenomena" it would be in the Northern region having a heritage of whittling wood. Wouldn't be surprised if someone, somewhere, in the area, isn't spinning discs on a raccoon platter mat. In the '80s I do remember Sony had a top-of-range set of headphones which did use wood. I think Denon have used it too. Still seems a bit odd to me though.

Kind Regards,
Stephen

Found a download of the barbershop at:

http://jaxov.com/binaural

At http://suzybogguss.com/binaural/recordings.html there are some audio tracks in mp3zip, which I haven't been able to try for myself.

Forgot to mention there are some other samples to download. The matchbox one is quite efèctive but the others less so. There's an 18K tone to test your hearing. Tad disappointed when I couldn't hear it. However when I unpluged my not all that hot earphones from my mobile, I could hear it using the mobile's speakers. So I was happy.

Kind Regards,
Stephen

I asked about a set of Thunderpants last year (I use Wharfedale Isodynamics, which are great, via a Hafler DH200 amp!!) but I didn't get an answer.
They've been a rave on Head-Fi for quite a while now.

Like the pic, but think I'd like to be 'in mono' in that situation......?

I'm still trying to find someone with a pair of Audio Technica AT-H7s

Wow that's a cool vid - it would have been good if he could have come round the front and taken a bit of my fringe and trimmed my eyebrows - that really would have amazed me.

I guess the way that trick is set up they can only make sounds come from the rear?
