I shall hope get my big old engine in situe today, this was me last year starting all 2 and a quarter tons of it, its not steam but runs on parrafin and is what is called a lamp start engine as i have to use a blow lamp to pre warm it before starting which has to be prefectly timed to get just the right amount of heat, it will then run all day without further heating if its not to cold or pouring with rain.

Its made by Blackstone of Stamford and is rated at only 10 hp dispite its size and was built in 1909, i'm the second owner from new.

Just a couple of miles from where I live in Cork, a little place called inishannon, they host a huge steam rally every year. The latest one happened only a few weeks ago. The folks down this end of the country are steam mad.

I totally get it though, there is something almost natural about these big steam beasts.

Spent the day in Kew Bridge steam museum with my boys a couple of weeks ago during their Jubilee 'grand streaming' weekend.

It was an absolutely fascinating visit, and their cornish beam pumping engine with a 90" piston bore is an awesome beast. the beam weights about 32 tons, and the counterweight is about 25 tons!. It pumped around 7 million gallons of water at day from 1846 until the late 1943s.

Just round the corner from me is a property converted from a former commercial garage. It house a steam engine and the garage door is....well...err quite tall!

We certainly did, we went on a club trip to Kew a couple of years ago, impressive engineering.

The engine is in place but only just as the ground is still very soft causing the jack starting sinking, bright sunshine at the moment just popped back for the caravan we will look like a proper Pikeys going along towed on the back of my transit, we get all the dids flashing their lights at us and other people giving us the finger or just filthy looks :eek:

Hopefully the weather will stay dry and make for a nice weekend with plenty of beer in the evenings :D
