Filtering on Balanced Mains

I have my hifi running on a balanced mains supply and I want to put some filters before any smps type power-supplies to stop crud getting back into the supply.

I have several boxes for filtering but these were made for normal i.e. 0-240 volt mains (thanks to Swampy's designs). Since the balanced mains is effectively +120 0 -120 I am a little reluctant to use these boxes.

I was told NOT to connect my Evenlode filter by the manufacturer.

So does anyone know of any devices which would work on balanced mains?

A standard mains filter should still work on balanced mains unless it happens to have differential mode filtering as well as common mode.

Common mode won't matter a hoot as it attempts to reject anything on both the Live & Neutral lines, if they are both Live but in antiphase it will make no difference at all.

Differential mode filters would need a second adding into what would be Live 2 to balance things up filter wise. I can't see why any filter would be problematic though going from normal 240V AC to balanced 120 0 120V AC.

Any surge suppressors such as MOVs will work just as well, except for any connected from Live to Earth. In theory they'd need to be replaced with lower voltage versions, others might need to be added from Live 2 to Earth, the same value as the others just mentioned.


Other than that, good to go as far as I can tell.

I had zero problems running a pair of Belkin PF40s on the output of a PS Audio P600 power plant.

I use a couple of linear power supplies of mine and have used a filter in the past with no issues

Mark - thanks for the info - just read about the P300/P600 power-plants - I did not realize that they produced a balanced output. I have a Belkin PF40 which I had not hooked up - but now I will give it a whirl.

John - I assume you have balanced mains - what filters have you used?

I am not as technical as Mark so not sure of the type and a long time since I used a filter with the Balanced mains (but similar approach as the Belkin). Give the Belkin a whirl and find out I think it probarly work with it
