Lost treble Audioengine A5

I've lost what appears to be all tweeter output on the passive speaker of my Audioengine A5 powered speakers. I guess this is likely to be a problem in the crossover. Does anyone know if this easy to check and would it be a simple repair - capacitor blown or something? As it's only a kitchen system I don't fancy spending 300 notes on a new pair, and the Audioengine website isn't big on support.

It's more likely to be the tweeter itself in all honesty :( Do you own or can you borrow a multimeter?

Thanks for the prompt reply Mark - yes, I have a multimeter, but I'm not sure how to use it beyond switching it on and sticking the probes on things.

Ok, I'm sure you'll be able to remove the tweeter that isn't working...

Obviously make sure everything is switched off & unplugged before doing so :eyebrows:

Remove the tweeter from the enclosure, you may need to desolder it on one side, you don't need to disconnect it from both wires! You may be lucky & it might have some type of push on Lucar connector.

Once you have it disconnected one side, set the multimeter to a low Ohms reading (100 Ohms or less) & connect the probes to both tweeter terminals.

You should have a reading of 15 Ohms or less, maybe about 6 Ohms. If you get a higher reading than 100 Ohms, or less than 1 Ohm, the tweeter is stuffed I'm afraid :(

Need more help feel free to ask, it's what we are all here for at the end of the day :)

Thanks for your help Mark - it's good to know there are still altruistic people around. I'm off to sunny Barrow for a few days so it will have to wait until the weekend, a few beers and a steady hand. I'll let you know how I get on.

I've had a look at removing the tweeter: its bezel is glued and screwed to the baffle, which is an integral part of the case. The only way in to the internals of the speaker is through the terminal plate, which is too far away from the croosover and the tweeter for me to unsolder a connection. So may thanks for your suggestion, but I think I'm up a gum tree. I'll check with Audioengine to see if they will supply just one speaker, but I have my doubts. If not, I may try and do something with a couple of soon-to-be-redundant B & W M1s and a secondhand sub. I seem to recall someone on here talking about a very compact amp - can't remember what it was called - that I could use to drive them and connect to my Squeezebox - anyone any thoughts on what that was?
