remember import duty bought a Cd from abroad £ 2.83 tax plus post office charged £8 handling fee
warranty if i needs repaired or sent back to factory - shipping both ways
most are 220v for europe not 240v for the uk

As well as import duty there will be vat at 20% . The government have a website which will tell you what the duty will be . some products have high duty dependant upon international treaties and any legislation protecting home markets .

However , some manufactures in china have got in the habit of putting a value less than £50 on the paperwork and this can go through customs without any vat or levy . Not strictly legit though. It is very hit and miss Ive had products which sail through and others which didnt . I suspect it may be based on how busy they are and the Olympics are approaching .

Also if they do charge a levy and vat , they also charge an admin fee:steam: . All must be paid before delievery is completed.

Yes I have been lucky enough in the past to experience something similar :D

I bought a load of class D amplifier kits from the far east but insisted on them being sent via DHL or similar fast, trackable courier.

They arrived in about three days, the package had the value as $20 US, which may well have been the case for each amplifier, but there were twelve of them :rfl:


It's a crapgame, you never know how it'll end up VAT or duty wise...

If you are interested in getting a Chinese tube amp, I suggest contacting the manufacturer directly and making your purchase from an authorised retailer.

In case you are not aware, it is currently a Wild Wild West in the audio industry in China at the moment. There are unscrupulous and unauthorised dealers out there who offer Grey products at lower prices. These look like the original thing but they might have cheaper internal parts such as capacitors.

To add to the confusion, the actual (and legitimate) Chinese factory offers the same amp in 2 different flavours. This could either be a cheaper product which has lower quality internals for the domestic Chinese market or a pricier model meant for export.

BTW, this also applies to Chinese food in China. There are also 2 versions of the same dish.
If you are a foreigner, you have to ask them to serve food which has less oil and less salt. :)

You have to decide if it's worth taking a chance. If you have to pay import duty/VAT etc., then you could end up with an expensive day out.

Yeah, its a bit hit and miss. The taxes etc. can make all the difference between worth a pop and costing a little too much. I have some thinking to do!
