Ok, anyone else have the above mentioned combination?
I am looking for a way around the problem I get when trying to run Spotify via the Tiny server built into the Touch, and would like if possible not to have a laptop in the equation.

Thanks Chris, I do have an Iomega nas, although it's ages since I used it, and thinkm possibly it won't work on Windows 7, I'll try and find it, any suggestions whilst I am looking for it?

Just a quick note for you, I am using Spotify through my laptop, and can also control whats happening on my iPad at the same time, do I assume correctly with the lappy in the line up, I shouldn't get the horrendous never ending probs like I do when I try and use Spotify just via the Tiny server?

The Iomega possibly hasn't got enough processing grunt to cope with the job (running LMS).
The device I linked to runs Linux (don't worry, you don't need to learn Linux), and is independent of the other machines on my network, yet can be accessed by all of them.
You can perform administration on the machine via a web browser.

Sorry mate....can you answer the question in paragraph two of my above post? Ta! :)

I missed the second paragraph

Run things from the laptop as you are now and you won't have the issues you have been having when using TinySC.

Cheers Chris!

Not quite as sexy as just pointing the mars bar or iPad at the Touch, but if it means it works.......... :)

PS, I downloaded the Logitech controller onto my iPad, and then noted that a number of people were saying how good iPeng is, so I paid 6.99 for it, but I don't believe it's any better?

If you know the IP address of the laptop then you can access LMS by the web browser on your iPad.

So, if the laptop is on an IP address of, say, 192.168.1.35 , to access it from a web browser (ie Safari) you could enter 192.168.1.35:9000 and it will open the server in a web page, and you can run things from there :)

Have you suffixed it with ":9000" and with no spaces?
If yes then press the go button....

Hi Chris,
On the strength of your link above I've just invested in one o' them zyxel NAS thingies - should arrive on Tuesday. Stand by for appeals for guidance  . I like the idea of not needing the PC to run the Touch and I'm short of a bit of storage space anyway so killed two birds etc at a good price, but my guess is that HDD prices will continue to fall much further soon. About time SSD prices got reasonable s well :) .
Dave.

You know where I am Dave :)
The Zyxel is pretty straightforward to get to grips with - just don't expect it to run processor intensive applications, as it has not been designed to do such things.
It's intended to just sit there in the corner acting as storage and dishing the files out when required.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for that :) .
If it only does what you say in your last sentence that's fine by me, that's all I want it to do (I think  )
Cheers,

Chris, my ip addy is 192.168.2.1
I then added :9000
and it says invalid ip address.......?

Stratmangler

The final digit being 1 normally denotes the router.

My router controls DHCP (gives out IP addresses to the local network), and its IP address is 192.168.1.1 on my network.

Try this http://www.groovypost.com/howto/microsoft/windows-7/find-your-local-ip-address-windows-7-cmd/

Craig - you are doing the IP check on the machine running LMS aren't you?

OK.
On the laptop running LMS you should have an icon up - it may be in the hidden area - right click on it and you should get the option to open web control.
Select that, then click on settings in the bottom right hand corner - this will open another page, and the far right hand tab is marked information.

The IP address of your server is in the area.
You should see the HTTP port immediately below - it's normally 9000

OK.
From your laptop, open your web browser, and enter 192.168.2.6:9000 in the address bar, then hit return.

Lets just see if your laptop can access it first.

It takes me to the Logitech Media Server

Stratmangler
23-06-2012, 21:22
It takes me to the Logitech Media Server

That's what I expected.

It may be a firewall issue then, or a network issue (your iPad locked out of the server on a browser basis, because it is not integrated fully into your network).

I don't have an iPad to play with, so send me yours, all in the pursuit of practical IT research :eyebrows:
Alternatively you need to find someone versed in integrating Windows and Mac OS machines to play nice with each other on a network.

You have iPeng, and that works, so forget I mentioned addressing LMS via a web browser :)

Chris, thanks sooooooo much for your patience and help!

Last question for tonight (hopefully forever but don't hold your breath!)

Are you saying that as I have iPeng and it controls the Touch, I woun't get the Spotify/Tiny Server issues I have had?

I can't definitively vouch for iPeng (no Apple devices on my network - my phone is Android), but if iPeng is anything like Squeeze Commander then you should be able to control Spotify running on the laptop from your iPad.
The apps tend to bypass networking issues.

My last Smartphone didn't like the Logitech freebie app - it took too much processing capability.
I'll give it a whirl again - I've changed Smartphone since then, and the new phone is a bit more capable.

Update - I've just downloaded it, it works fine, however it's a bit limited in search facilities, so I think I'll stick with Squeeze Commander.

Hi Guys,
I guess it won't help much but I've had exactly the same problem and I've been monitoring this thread since day one hoping you would sort it. Last weekend I got fed up of waithing  and sat down and repeatedly deleted and reinstalled LMS and did factory resets without number. Don't know what did it but it did eventually begin to work and has done so ever since - I've even installed EDO v7 since then and it still works  .
I was getting exactly the same symptoms as the icehockeyboy on IP addresses etc. and I've changed nothing in that area but now everything is talking to each other. (hence my 'investment in the zyxel NAS310 :) ).
Persist is all I can offer :) .
Dave.

Update= Just playing "The Smile Sessions" by The Beach Boys, via Spotify, thinking all my probs were over..........when the all too familiar silence kicked in, and I looked up to see the Bushmaster searching for a signal................................ARSE!!!!!!!! !!!

Edit to add....twice in as many minutes!

It seems that if I have the lappy on, and connected to the Touch (wirelessly) I can still use external devices (inc the iPad) to control The Touch, and nothing goes wrong, but once I shut the laptop down, those frikkin annoying problems return post haste!! :(

Craig

One last thing to try with regard to accessing the server from Safari on the iPad....

Try this...

http://192.168.2.6:9000

Maybe the Mac stuff wants all of the code to play with :eyebrows:

If it doesn't work, then fine.
All I was doing was dotting the T's and crossing the I's.

:D
You're welcome.

I have become lazy through Windows adding bits of code when required, according to context - my thoughts drifted to the point of what if it doesn't, and requires all the appropriate addressing...

It seems that Apple don't like lazy approaches :eyebrows:

I use ipeng and logitech software on my ipod/notebook for spotify . Works well most of the time but can be glichy.
If i had an ipad i would be tempted to use the new ipad spotify app and stream using airplay to a Apple tv. You also get the use of HD movie streams form itunes.

You can't address the Touch via a web browser when it is running TinySC.
Too much processing required.
So you have to have a machine doing the heavy load work if you want to control your player/s from a web browser.

You could do a lot worse than use on of these to run LMS to control your Touch players http://www.dabs.com/products/zyxel-2tb--1-x-2tb--nsa310-powernas-1-2ghz-1-bay-network-attached-storage-7TLR.html - mine has not skipped a beat since I installed it on my network.
It can serve 24/192 files without being stressed, and internet radio streams don't come near that kind of bit density, so Spotify is easily dealt with.
I upgraded my free account to a trial premium account because of the problems you were having Craig, and I can report that once set up properly the Spotify app didn't glitch once - I was quite impressed with the way it all worked in a relatively slick fashion, and didn't sound too shabby either.

The other really nice thing about the Zyxel NSA310 is that it's cheap to run.
From the Zyxel site....

Power consumption

Access mode: 16.3 watt
Wake-on-LAN mode: 0.24 watt

That standby (WOL) figure is fantastic (for that matter so is the access figure), and the NSA310 spins down to standby when it hasn't been accessed for around 15 minutes.

Running LMS on a Zyxel NSA310 would also mean that you don't have to boot up your laptop every time you want to play music via the Touch players in your household, as it just lives in the corner somewhere out of the way.

For the record, I don't have anything to do with Zyxel - I'm just a very satisfied customer :)
