IAS Cadnam Export Speakers.

For sale a nice example of these speakers.

IAS loudspeakers were produced over a number of years. they made a few models which all used a 1/4 wave back loaded horn system. NEVER used complex crossovers, rather they built and designed the crossover to work with the very best drive units we could get hold of. We even used SERIES crossovers with very low roll of rates which impacted on the music very little. Although to the end of the IAS story we went to 12 dB per octave parallel xovers which were much easier to build.

There is a split in one of the drivers but nothing to worry about. all units are working perfectly and go LOUD. have had the hook up too quad and fidelity amps all with ex results.

Hi,

Photo's on the split in the CB8 driver. Any opinions on how it can be fixed would be good. as they would increase the value. To me i could be worse really :scratch:.

Looks like im doing a swap for a pair of IAS Ashurst. Shame really The cadnams are very nice but i am right on top of them in my room. So im going to give stewart a chance to restore them to former glory.

I am originally from southampton and lived not far from the IAS workshop in swaythling back in the early eightys,and through a mutual friend met Alan Willis. Needless to say there was nothing on the market at that time that came even close to the audio capability of the beaulieus so after a chat i arranged a finance deal with Alan where i wrote half a dozen post dated cheques equaling three hundred pounds.After a few days they were delivered.Alan told me that the pair of speakers he sold me were made for an Earls Court hi fi show and that which hi-fi had written an article on them the gist of which stated that where normal loudspeakers were adequate for the village hall the beaulieus were adequate for the village. I still have them and they still move the earth when turned up.At one time when I was about twenty six I was enjoying some music quite loud when there was a beating on the door,to my surprise it was a copper who had been sent out from the local nick about a mile away to find the source of the music, he was anice bloke we had a laugh and i turned it down a bit and he left.I also had a visit from the chaps at the environmental health office due to a complaint from a new neighbour we listened to some classical music first (the beaulieus excel at this as Alan played a cornet in the salvation army band so that is how he tuned them) needless to say they said ok but what else do you listen to so i thought what the hell and played them some drum and bass quite loud(about normal for me)they werent impressed as they said that my neighbours whole house was vibrating ( I should hope so as the vieta bass units were used by southampton uni to simulate earthquakes in buildings)so after some negotiation I asked for a decibel limit as i have access to measuring equipment but he wouldnt commit to any fixed number just that i had to be reasonable but as i had asked for a limit which i would stick to mainly to protect i had myself against confiscation .I still have the speakers and the neighbours.In about 1990 I had a portable cd player with a headphone output of about half a watt and as i had blown up yet another amp i was running the beaulieu's directly from the headphone socket after fashioning some leads from some old phones and speaker cables.I was on the ground floor and a resident up on the third floor complained that the sound was making the bed vibrate which tells you how low these babys go half a watt of power at sub 50hz, oh well as scotty said "you cannae beat the laws of physics captain". Alan was a great bloke he always had time to chat.I remember visting him at his parents place in woolston where he had a (if i remember rightly)16 inch unit in a box the size of a wardrobe upstairs in the front room amongst a lot of other equipment.He was a legend amongst me and my friends who also invested in his speakers my brother sill has his and so do a couple of other people i know and one mate had a pair of the big boys about five feet high with two bass units a midrange a tweeter and a super tweeter I cant for the life of me remember what they were called but i know his house suffered structural damage from them.We were totally shocked to learn of his passing.the beaulieus are 600 watt each and alan had a pair of active amps to go with them which i couldnt afford which is a shame as i killed a few amps that just werent up to the job I know run a Rauch 50s which came from a cinema and a Nad 1300 pre amp and a cambridge audio cd4 cd player they still outperform almost everything i have heard.So i would like to say thanks to alan and stewart for a lifetime of fantastic sound reproduction,they still make jaws drop and they are about forty years old. LEGENDARY amongst those that know the nature of the beast....

Just had a lucid moment the big boys were called IAS References and i only knew of one pair at that time.
