View Full Version : Do I need a sub?
I just fancy giving one a go, just for a laugh! :)
Where should I look? What's worth trying as an "entry level" sub that isn't crap? How much (or little!) should I think of spending?

There are 2nd hand big ones, but they get pretty steep pricewise ;)

We had some rain here but must have been bad in the North East if Mike needs a sub.
That sub looks a bit small Bob.
A Sevylor Pointer K1 is great for the price and might be more useful than a sub.

I got a JBL CS-300 that I am trying to get rid of but level entry it is not. Two 12" drivers and built in 200W amp makes it too much of a handful. My neighbours have forced me to stop using it. With its light fittings and window pane shaking ability I can understand their point of view :D.
But at about 40Kg it is not something I wish to lift up, let alone post.

 True.... Used to play with GRP flat keel ones my dad made for us as kids. They have aged better than the 3 kids....
Reminds me with boats of that saying "Any ship can be a minesweeper.......once"
I presume Mike is looking for a subwoofer for Home Theatre use, and they can certainly add a fair bit of oomph in the areas most speakers just cannot reach, and there are many on the market from REL etc.. If there is a separate SW output from the Amp, this is ideal, but they are always difficult to match to speakers when it comes to music.... For video it is less an issue...

Quite right! :)
I kinda thought that posting in the AV section would have given a hint as to what it's for? :D

http://www.bkelec.com/ always good for the price and size.
As jon1 asks, choice depends on the use, music or movies as there is usually a compromise.
Velodyne would possibly be one of the best,

Just for movies, Mark. ;)
The Velodyne looks impressive but six grand is just a 'touch' more than I was thinking of spending! :D
These work well with music as well as films and are not that expensive s/h:

I've got one of these, works great with films and musically:

I'm really happy with it.

Now for my serious suggestion.
Why do you need a subwoofer?
If you want decent bass, without going the vintage route, then The Edingdales are the answer to your problem.
The Edingdales are the answer to your problem.
Say what now?... what the hell are they, Chris?
Oh, hang on.... something from Colin, maybe? :)
Perhaps "do I need a sub" is actually the wrong question...
My front end speakers are all PMC transmission lines with a quoted response right down to 20Hz. I should probably have asked; "do I want a sub, just for a laugh?" ;)
I'm just curious as to whether, or not, a sub will add anything to the party when I just want big bangs 'n crashes in daft movies. A nice satisfying "thud" when a bad guy gets a cap popped in his ass never did anyone any harm! :D

Despite superficial appearances they're a two way speaker :eyebrows:

Mike, I had a fairly cheap subwoofer, an SVS-big tube thing. Yes it could produce a lot of deep bass but it was always chugging along with the music and not properly integrating with the room acoustics.
Changing to a Velodyne DD15 was a huge step up-the electronics allow you to display microphone measurements on your television. You can then adjust the response to the chosen position of the sub. Once this is done once you can forget it and you have true cinema like bass.
There are probably plenty of other makes that do this so a good second hand one would, IMO, be a far better solution than a cheap new one.

Hi Jerry,
I'm not interested in it's performance with music. I have a completely separate system in another room for that! ;) I'm just looking for a bit more "thump" from my AV setup. There's nothing particularly lacking in it ATM, I just wonder if a sub will bring a bit more "heft" when I want to get silly!
That's right ;)

But most films contain music Mike and the cheap ones dont work properly IMO. Here is a photo of mine, minding it's own business in the corner of the room :)

Very nice, Jerry, but a DD15 comes in at getting on for five grand from what I can see... more than ten times what I'm thinking of spending! :D
I could do with a more substantial centre speaker too!

Is that what they cost now? Oh well-sell that Porche you are fed up with!

They sound a lot better than they look - fast as feck, with proper tuneful bass, and they image like illegitimate sons too :)
I wonder how much I could sell the PMC's for......

I was looking for a second sub to add to my system when I came across some floorstanders from Mission with subs built in. I havn't looked back since.
If you ever get down to my neck of the woods, I have an Acoustic Energy Evo sub available for £125.

Second that, they are great speakers Mike, might even make you forget about your Yammies!

Hi Ali,
They're "on notice" too, mate... no problems with them, but I think I might fancy a change.
But this is about the AV setup ATM! ;)

Aye, I reckon the Edingdales would be great for that too, they do stonking bass.

For AV duties, I second MG's suggestion of BK's range.
They are made to order, so you can have fun choosing your veneer.
The Monolith is a ported design and is the prefered unit for AV set-ups by opinion of the chaps with serious televisions.
I use the sealed enclosure designs in my 2 channel systems.
