Fibre Optics?

Being new to the forum and after trying to think of something that may be useful and new to the wealth of knowledge within here, I was wondering of peoples thoughts on fibre cleaning?

I only raise this as a topic as I deal an awful lot with fibre optic links on military aircraft - along with the misconception that if there is light then it's fine...

I just wondered if the topic has ever been covered?

Any thoughts?

What is fibre cleaning? Is this something done to the end connectors?

I've heard of the connectors being "polished" or using glass as opposed to plastic in fibre optic cables. I'm curious - what signals do they carry in military aircraft?

Fibre optic links are used on Typhoon Aircraft for data bus links between the various avionics systems...They don't get polished as such, but are always being checked for cleanliness as if there is roughly 15% covered by dirt its hugely degrades the signal.

Being quite new to decent hifi and using fibre optic link cables from my DAC i was wondering if people ever actually checked them for cleanliness?
