I noticed that the logo includes the Apogee DAC, which was recently reviewed alongside the Beresford in HIFI Choice. Given that the Beresford out performed the Apogee in their lab test report, and is a mere fraction of the price, would it be justified to give such prominence to the Apogee?
Of course, my apologies if I got it wrong in my thinking. I am already surprised that the highly respected 1200 is not part of the logo.

Indeed Stan, as soon as your new DAC is ready and I've bought one, it'll be going on the banner. :)

If its OK I'd like to make a critcal comment on the banner design as its actually something that I'm qualified to comment on:)

Cover the pictures only and ask yourself in what direction does your eye flow over the writing.

Then cover the writing only and ask yourself in what direction your eye flow over the montage.

They should flow in the same direction.:)

Interesting comment, Paul. We'll see what Rob thinks - that's his playground :)

Should the pictures be viewed in a particular way then? I assume you mean that the eye naturally follows the pictures in a circular motion (or rectangular) and the writing from left to right. Yes, that is a difference but how many people would cover the images and the text rather than just viewing it as a whole?

Remember that it's not like a road sign that has to be read quickly and efficiently, it's simply a decoration showing some member's components, we'll assume that people who are already here don't need to know that this is 'The Art of Sound' as they must have already typed it or read it at least once to get here in the first place. I think you may be taking it for more than it is, and it was a design that was chosen amongst several people out of several designs as to be most suitable and decorative for the site.

What alterations would you make?

Primalsea

Hi Rob, please don't take it personal.

Put it this way, if it was me I would re arrange the pics so that the eye flows from top left to bottom right. This might be achieved by puting the lighter images in the top left and gradually going darker with the darkest in the bottom right while also keeping a general trend of having the images at the top lighter than the ones at the bottom.

However its not me and uptake is optional I just thought I would make the suggestion while also not trying to upset anyone.

I'm not taking it personally at all Paul, I was just interested in your angle. :)

We're going to have another fiddle with the banner shortly so I'll bear your thoughts in mind, always takes a while to get these things bang on.

Thats good I though I had upset you for a while.

See if you can find some pics of classical figurative paintings that will fill your monitor.
You will see what I mean about your eye flowing over the painting. Makes you look at them in a different way.

Nay, I get loads of comments about my designs on here, the negative positive split is about 50/50.

Figurative art, I guess you're talking about works from the likes of Nicolas Poussin and Édouard Manet (I love Le déjeuner sur l'herbe), I'll have a look and get a feeling for your train of thought. Personally I prefer the likes of M.C. Escher and René Magritte so I have to tame that in anything I design, not really ideal for hi-fi. :)

One of my very favourites though is Georges-Pierre Seurat, I adore Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and it's my wallpaper at work. I recently went to the National Gallery and they had some of Seurat's work on display, but not that one sadly, I believe it's in Chicago currently. However they did have Bathers at Asnières which has a very similar feel albeit that of a warmer brighter day (and the reverse angle of course). Stunning painting, and so huge too, the computer monitor compresses everything these days and it's easily forgotten just how large some of these works of art are.

Marco, you must know quite a bit about art, what floats your boat?

Primalsea

I used to go to the National gallery a lot when I studied art, Great Place:)

They have a huge painting of Hercules having his 7 locks of hair cut off when he falls alseep after shagging the prostitue. I cant remember who painted it now but thats a great example of the eye flow thing.

I think I did have a bit too much to drink last night:)

I searched the National Gallery's website and the artwork database but couldn't find the painting. Maybe they dont have it on show anymore.

I'm not so sure. Art often depicts life vividly. If the curator panders to snobby collectors and those wishing to be seen in the gallery then he might. True art lovers and artists express themselves...

I presume permission from the owners of the artwork in the above logo has been sort?
I mention this as I happen to own the copyright to that Tannoy photograph! and haven't been.

All the pictures in the banner were supposed to be images submitted by AoS members as far as I know.

There would appear to have been a mix up of some sort, I'll bring the matter to the attention of the administrators ASAP.

Apologies in advance.

Cheers...

Hi Duncan,

What do you mean by "copyright" as far as these ordinary pictures are concerned?

They're Ian's Tannoys; just normal pictures which he (a member here) sent in to be used on the banner...

Even though you took them, I'm usnsure as to what exactly the issue is, given that they have no real value - please explain?

Marco.

If that image belongs to you Duncan and you detest its usage then I will remove it forthwith. As the image was placed in the public domain by Ian (and therefore being placed well within the copyright realm of 'The Art of Sound'), it was utilised in the construction of the banner. All the images used in the banner are images of member's equipment and therefore not used out of context or with any bad intention.

There is an edit of the banner planned for Friday so if you deem the usage of the image inappropriate I will remove it and replace it with another image that 'The Art of Sound' holds on its database.
