JPW AP3 Standmount Speakers For Sale

Up for sale is pair of JPW AP3 large standmount speakers, They are finished in a lovely real wood veneer with only minor marks here & there.

Brand new bass drivers fitted & crossovers upgraded with Jantzen Audio Polypropylene capacitors & Air core inductors.

They sound absoloutely superb on the end of a Nait 2 but the bass is just too overpowering in my little lounge :(

Collection preferred (Falmouth, Cornwall) I suspect a courier would cost a fair bit... If you are interested I'll look into it for you.

Nice sounding speakers, worth that for the new Vifa bass/ midrange units.

I have a pair of AP3's that need the bass/midrange units re-foamed.

Putting a little extra wadding inside may well help cleaning up the bass.

They certainly are an awful lot of speaker for the money.

In my view, plenty of speakers need a little more damping than originally supplied by the manufacturer.

My Tannoy Devon's benefited, so did JPW Gold's, JPW Mini Monitors, etc.

I reckon to improve on AP3's would cost quite a bit of money, they are in many ways better than Spendor BC1's, I have A/B compared them.

I also rate AP3s very highly. Rich and crisp, good timing, the tweeters are very good as well. Passed a set on to a friend of mine must be 10 years ago now, they still sound excellent.

Okay, okay ! After all your gushing I've got to try the wadding trick... These are withdrawn from sale until I've tried adding more wadding.

Hmm, this is the complete opposite to what Jimmy Hughes used to recommend - remove all wadding for better clarity and definition! The wadding is to damp internal reflections, so I'm not entirely sure how this would affect the quantity of bass. Certainly quality will be changed. My JPW ML310 was so completely stuffed with wadding that removing half of this improved dynamics and restored some transparency and life. If you like your speakers but your room is too small then maybe deal with the room instead? Tube traps, bass resonators, etc would better deal with excess bass in the room I suspect. Just my 2p worth..

From experience with the JPW AP3's, bass will be tightened up by adding a little more damping inside the cabinet.

I am not saying that the AP3 bass is particularly loose as standard, in fact it is very much tighter than the Spendor BC1.

I've read that Naim amps have low damping factor so this could be part of the issue. I've heard the AP3 in a small (12'x11') room and no bass boom was present. This was with a Cambridge amp.

I stole some wadding out of another pair of speakers to try & while the bass boom reduced a bit (still not enough!) midrange clarity completely left the building so thats a no go.

Regarding the Naims ability : I tried them on a mates Denon 70wpc & the boom was very much still there however turning the bass tone control down 1/4 totally sorted it out :rolleyes:

Not a compromise I'm willing to make though.

To be fair I dont think its the speakers at fault, its just the room layout as a whole... Something I dont get much of a say in.

Now wired up some Keesonic Kubs & they are making some lovely sounds so not worth any more messing around...

Hi Kev, Theres currently one interested party but nothing serious as of yet.

P&P will be around the £25 mark (speakers sent seperately in 2" polystyrene cartons.)
