Because I only have my Lenco 75 to repaint, a Plinth to build, my ESL 57's to rebuild and my Home Office to build from scratch this week I thought I would buy myself an Akai Reel to Reel tape player as well:stalks:
Having never owned one, always wanted one and have absolutely ZERO experience of them I decided to just trawl eBay until one came up in my price range (really cheap) and I can now announce to the world that I am the proud owner of an AKAI X5000 Reel to Reel tape machine!
Okay, so now it's on its way to me, what do I do with it when it gets here?
Answers on a postcard please.......
Make some recordings. Learn about off-tape monitoring and hear what change to the sound you get when you record to tape. Try a couple of tape speeds and see what you think about the differences.
Have loads of fun.
Good microphones are not cheap if you get enthusiastic for live recording.

Oooh! This is the tip of a very big iceberg!
Whatever you do, don't start checking eBay for Factory made reels, they're even more addictive than the machines that play them :)

And whatever you do don't ever get so interested in tape machines that you start collecting professional ones...

To be honest, I didn't know which one to go for and figure any would be the answer as it is more of a nostalgia thing for me than a serious addition to my system. I have been thinking it would go well in my new shed attached to the Hi-Fi in there.
We will see.
Not the greatest r2r ever made, but at that proce who's arguing!
If you get a taste for it, Revoxes don't cost a fortune. A nice G36 would be good.

For £36 that's a pretty good way of finding out about r:r - as the others have said it's pretty addictive!
