RoboCopper

Friend of mine would like to buy a turntable which should be simple, but with "audiophile" features and sound.
But must be low cost, can be SH of course.
something around £100 mark.

Any suggestions?

Any Thorens TD series, 150 in particular would fit the bill nicely.

Whoah.......fast reply, thanks.

Are they being sold on ebay?
I never purchased turntable on eBay, is it advisable to buy turntables on ebay due to transport issues?

As above, or a Goldring Lenco GL75 in good nick. Ariston TT's worth a look (£40-£100), as are revolver TT's (£225-£50). Later Thorens TD280 can be had for £50 or a good used Rega P2 as they occasionally come up at £100 with the RB250.

Ok, will need to ask a friend what could be his interest.
I am not sure that he wants to collect it unless is close to Heathrow area.

don't know if i'm allowed to post ebay lnks or not , but there a good example of an AR on ebay now (2nd listing) that failed to sell and the guys willing to ship , at the mo its £50 failed to sell at £75 , fine decks simply search for AR turntables .

Is the Eb 101 the one with the best bearing?

The 101 was fine, as was the "Legend" model in the UK IIRC. The ones that may need attention are the 77XB and the first "AR Turntable" from the early 80's which had wobbly-fit bearings and a scrappy sound to go with it. The later ones were definitely better and had a light and fresh quality to the sound, with great clarity if set up right IMO.

"audiophile" features

What features?
Most decent TTs tend to be lacking in any kind of features :eyebrows:

Forgive the shill for my own stuff, but what about this?

http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=16994

It's good, absolutely silent in operation, with lid off, cork or acrylic £20 mat from ebay on top of the stock one and some Vantage Audio feet, it should sound really good. Dave suggested a ton, and I really don't think it's overpriced at that.

We are still on the lookout, but it is hard when you need to forward information to friend and than discuss with him about options.

What about brand new good value TTs?

Any sugestions?

That is what I meant, no features, just good quality sound and reliability

spin the motor, good arm, good sound quality.

New options? Rega RP1 comes with excellent after care, hours of careful listening and utterly reliable parts over decades and a fitted cartridge.

Pro-ject have been popular for years, although beneath the surface and you can buy them almost anywhere, unlike Rega, but the sonics of the cheaper ones (motor vibration/feedback/rumble) can be a bit iffy sometimes depending on model.

There's a nice early steel-chassis Heybrook TT2 on Ebay now with a Rega RB300 on it

I have a Garrard Zero 100S which had been in storage for many years. I've given it a service and just need to make an adjustment to the start up position for the arm. In very good working and visual condition. Complete and ready to plug in. £85.

Collating what you've said , ie- Brand new - £100 mark - with arm - good quality sound -

I think this is an impossible list of requirement and your friend should investigate some of the suggestions on this thread. 2nd hand is not that risky and there's plenty of forum advise on what to look out for .

good luck to your friend .

Thanks for input and photos, but my friend is slow when making those decisions. HiFi is not his top priority like in our (my) case :)

Secondhand needn't be an issue at all, and from here it will be plain sailing. At that price point it really is your only option.
