Any chance of creating a whole sub forum section dedicated to Vintage equipment.. An idea to keep the modern Hi-Fi seperate.

+1 whilst i'm a technics 1210 nut I do love finding knackered bits of kit and fetching them back from the brink (see my Garrard 301 restoration link). I love vintage gear, I'm thinking of doing a section on refurbing some celestion Ditton 44's I have.

I'm sympathetic to the idea of a Vintage 'room' - I have to be, since virtually all of the gear I use is vintage! ;)

There has recently been a thread on what constitutes 'Classic' equipment. The two are to some extent related. We would have to decide what is vintage? Is it stuff designed before 1960, before 1970, before 1980 etc.? I think you get the idea.

"Past Masters" is there to discuss all gear now no longer in production. This does not necessarily mean vintage.

Well Vintage is upto who ever creates the heading to stipulate this, ideally pre CD, but to me it's pre 80's. I personally think 'Past Master's is no good within the ''HiFi Studio & Trade sub fora.. One of the probs is a lot of vintage turntables for instance get covered in the 'Analogue Art' section! You also get the same old crap from the modern man who think old gear is rubbish, well it works both ways really but at least we could seperate the two people..

At least we could probably depart from the annoying bargins on E-Bay topic which is an exciting prospect alone :rolleyes:

I would then love to see a dedicated Vintage Sub Fora so i for one can avoid the other sections like the plague becuase im sick to death of being confronted with Techy talk, specialist this & specialist that :(

The question as to what constitutes 'Classic' or 'Vintage' gear has been asked before: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1676 , but without anyone coming up with a defining answer.

We have split the 'Listening Today ...' area into two in hiving off 'Classical music', without too many tears (and without defining what is meant by 'classical' music!).

It's up to the Moderators to decide if 'Past Masters' is to similarly split and if so how.

Can I make a suggestion for the cut off date on vintage stuff? I put forward the date of 1983. So anything built in that year and thereafter is not vintage.
Why 1983? Well, that is the year that CD players showed up in the shops.

As for classic: that's not tied to a particular year or period, but to the product's standing and reputation. A typical example is the NS1000M. It was produced over many decades and is still made up to today. The other one is the SL-1200.

Based on the above, I think that classic gear straddles far too wide a period and would clash with existing forum sections. But vintage could be far easier to confine if my suggestion for the cut off date of 1983 is accepted.

I'm not really sure what it is that you want, Andr'e. Isn't here (Past Masters) exactly what you need? No Techie talk here :)

If there were to be a Vintage section, how would it be different from Past Masters (serious question)?
