As a couple of you know, I am on a mission to sort out my garage. I am going down the "Home Office" route and as my garage is enormous it makes more sense to turn two thirds of it into an office and construct a garden shed for all of, well, garden stuff!

The crap I have pulled out is quite astonishing so I decided to "do a Car Boot"!
Like you do. Anyhow I did a bit of research and decided to go to one organised by the local Rotary Club as all of the proceeds were for a good cause and it was local and modest in size, and there was a decent Cafe on the site - Bacon Butties:eek:

Anyhow, as I pulled up on my pitch allocated to me - Vultures descended. It was amazing, people were unloading the car for me just to see what I had. I sold three largish things before they were actually out of the car. The Boot Sale officially started at eight and this was 7.15 so i was caught completely off guard. Then as the morning wore on it became apparent to me that there were a number of people who were wandering about buying a LOT of stuff, I could see them going back to their cars and literally filling them with swag.

So I started asking about. These people were actually at their wholesale outlet, not a Car Boot. They were buying up "stock" thenm travelling off the following - next - weekend to a massive Car Boot sale a bit further afield and resell this stuff. I was astonished. This is another economy, completely under the radar.

I used to get to boot sales as early as possible & snaffle up likely looking stereo & hifi kit.. Take it home, fix it & sell it :eyebrows:

I'd still be doing it now if I had transport, it was a handy second income :)

You would be extremely lucky if you found any hi-fi at all at a boot sale around East Cornwall :(

Last year I went to one near Polperro and the best item I ever saw was a Technics 1210 that was truly fit for the dump and nothing else. This clown was asking £300 for it and he said "they fetch an awful lot of money on ebay", but his rose tinted glasses seemed to have completely missed the lack of an arm, no mat, the plinth scratched to hell, a broken lid, the cue light busted off and the platter was almost white with corrosion. He was rather miffed when I offered him a straight swap with my ice cream because that was all it was worth

I've not been to boot sales for years, i noticed a change when things like on line auctions appeared. Believe me i've had some awesome finds on boots in the past..one of my best ones was Moog 'Mini Moog Model D' synthesizer, ARP 'Odyssey', rare silver faced model synthesizer, wait for it both from the same guy £75.00 the pair. EMS 'VCS-3 synthesizer £40.00.. Numerous amounts Vintage gear for next to nothing, i bought my old 'TD124' from a booty £50 i think it was...These days i very much doubt i'd pick anything of intrest up, people are too clued up these days..

I'm a regular at mine! Last visit was the weekend before last and I came home with an original 1983 vintage front-loading Technics SL-P10 CD player for £5.

Reminds me - still haven't tried it yet. Where did I put it?

I have used them several times as a seller for general household clearouts but am finding them too much hassle for too little return these days. The last straw was someone at the last one I did openly laughing at me asking £15 for an immaculate Brabantia kitchen bin. I did manage to shut him up by pulling out my phone, finding the John Lewis website and proving to him that it currently retails for £109, but he still seemed unable to comprehend that I would ask more than £1 for it.

Very little gear appears on the Boot's around my neck of the woods but I have purchased loads of cheapo vinyl with some rarities. I managed a pair of Celestion ditton 15's with stands for £30. I've bought a couple of valve radios for a fiver but thats been about it. :(

The 'descending vulture' thing is a bit of a shock the first time I must admit

What really f***** me off about the first one I went to was not only the descending vultures rooting out the best stuff, but the fact that the pikey c**** NICKED most of the stuff - fair enough trying to get in for first dibs but then to steal it... I was livid, and the next time I went I took a big stick, a surly attitude and a rottweiler wife, then unloaded the car one box at a time - without problems!

I have been to a few last year, but never found a thing hifi. (Odd bit of midi system and the like, but nothing "proper".) My father-in-law goes religiously every week and I've been training him up how to recognise vintage Tannoys and the like!

We have started going to carboots for clothes for Connie ... I was put off the idea thinking it would all be crap but the standard of baby clothes at carboots in worcester is amazing
on sunday we bought 5 items of next clothing in mint condition for £1 and a pair of Clarke's red patent leather shoes for £1

I just go to find cameras, Ive found a few in the past, nothing that special, but i have made a profit on everything i have bought!
not once have i seen a bit of hifi that i would concider hifi

on the subject of vultures ... there is one who goes to the booty we frequent, he looks a little like he has evolved specifically for car boots! he has a hunch back that seems to allow him some extra reach over the surface of the tables and a long nose with a pair of reading glasses perched on the end that he uses to inspect things ... in fact, now i think about it he actually looks like a vulture!! definitely looks like a Terry Pratchet character ... from what i have seen he only buys gold! ... ill see if i can get a photo of him next weekend!

I bought a lovely Marantz integrated amp for £15 once - that's the only hi-fi I've ever got from a boot sale. Bronze coloured with VU meters. Had an intermittant fault on one channel but I got it fixed for £20. Lent it to a mate as a stopgap when his Audiolab 800A packed in - that was in 1993, he still has it...

TBH I didn't think much booting went on any more what with eBay and so on. People go on about places like Cash Convertors selling stolen goods - well they don't have nothing on a boot sale.

I do a couple a year and always sell a fair bit to other car booters before the gates open.
Some of them resell the same day at a mark up.

Have had a few bits of hifi over the years but it is less and less now.

I have subsequently discovered that a friend of mine is preparing for a car boot here in Chelsea. There are sixty spots and a waiting list to get ON the waiting list!
I discovered this as I questioned why there were a mountain of boxes marked Gucci, Armani, Dunhill etc. all down the hall:stalks: She just said "oh for my car boot sale"
Now that's a car boot I would like to go to!!! (un)Fortunately not in London over the weekends.

i might start going again to search for vinyl, it strikes me there may be people who want to get something for their LP's but can't be bothered to list them on ebay individually.

I personally don't like the whole 'vulture economy' thing, it strikes me as a little unfair. I thought there were strict rules and start times at all the booties round my way, but i guess people must park up elsewhere and wander on site in anticipation of stall holders emptying their gear. Don't you have pay more to be there for the first hour of trading? How can people be there even before its officially started?

For the first time ever the other month I wandered into a proper auction house near me. The place was choker with the lowest of human skank. didn't live up to expectations at all - i had visions of antiquated, middle england, fueled by watching 'flog it', antiques road show, and all the other bollocks on TV. how wrong was i.

True, but my experience suggests that, in hi-fi terms, if it looks a bit old and hasn't got "Technics" or "Bang & Olufsen" written on it, they ignore it. Even the latter often gets left alone because if it's not working "there's no-one who can fix it any more"!

When I used to do car boots many years ago (and for me it was a living not just a novelty day out) I was at first surprised at how the punters wanted to buy decent stuff for next to nothing.

Slowly it dawned on me that if they had any money they would be shopping at Harrods and not at a run-down greyhound racing stadium during a pre-dawn rainstorm.

Minstrel SE

Yes and thats why carboots are not really a midday stroll and finding quality stuff you like.

As you say the dealers will be unloading cars and telling them to hurry up way before the official opening time. Theres clearly money to be made pouncing on the newbies.

Im the sort that likes to wander round with an ice cream at a reasonable hour of the day. Of course there is nothing left that hasnt been raked over so I dont bother any more.... well very rarely on a sunny day with a vain hope of finding something small and cheap.

Its the sharp end of trading and plenty of dodgy dealers at the bigger ones. A 7.5 tonne truck full of crap like smashed up amplifiers and old computers...straight out of the recycling skip and all laid out on a tarp in a field...lovely

I think its amazing what people do buy...old toasters and kettles...most of it is junk anyway. I think some of them have serious money but everybody loves a bargain eh :)

I had a Bedford van. £75 on the road. Took ages to get anywhere because the top speed was 50 mph. Sold it to a bloke who was really into Bedford vans (yeah, your guess is as good as mine) for £350.

Did a boot with a mate one time and he even sold the car we came in. The people came to pick it up later so we could still get home. That was at a quite posh one in Nantwich though.

At my local car boot sale (now sadly closed) one of the regular buyers used to turn up in an immaculate late 1970s Rolls Royce. I often wondered if he had to resort to shopping at car boot sales because he had a Rolls Royce, or if he could afford a Rolls Royce because he shopped at car boot sales...

First boot sale of the year near us last Sunday. Turnout was piss poor, but there was a freezing wind and I pitied those braving it. Got just 2 CDs, "Very Best of Elton John" and also one called "Wallflower" by Diana Krall. Don't know if it's my sort of thing (haven't played it yet) but I've heard one or two on here seem to rate her, so at 50p thought it worth a punt. Oh and a roll of duct tape too. And some gardening gloves.

Went to two boot sales today - 'serial booties'!

The first was just to buy; it was freezing cold and I was getting a bit pissed off with it all, but picked up a hard back copy of Eric Clapton's autobiography for 20p, in excellent condition, and a couple of DVDs for 50p each. My partner bought a sackfull of clothes, and suggested we vist another booty; again just to buy.

However it wasn't open when we got there, and were told we would have to wait an hour before they opened. Given that I had no intention of sitting in the car for an hour, my partner suggested we go in to sell (the clothes she had bought), which would allow us immediate entry and (the reason behind her thinking) would allow us first dibs on what other sellers had on offer. Apparently all traders, and semi-pro sellers do this. So whilst my partner was buzzing around picking up stuff, I set up our stall (a picnic table we keep in the back of the car). She returned with inter alia a set of saucepans and a couple of frying pans, which with some of the clothes bought previously, were subsequently sold at a vast profit!

I went around and picked up five CDs (some Beatles, Etta James and Otis Redding) and two boxed sets of 'Red Dwarf' (series I to VIII) all for a tenner.

So all in all not a bad morning's worth.

I've never seen the attraction of car boot sales myself. The only time I've done one as a seller, it pissed down with rain all day and we barely sold enough to cover our costs.

Many years ago, when our first daughter was a baby, we went up to see my parents one weekend. As with most new parents, we were a bit obsessed with our new family member, and various relatives dropped round to see her. I rang up my uncle, who lived about five minutes' drive away, and asked him if he and my aunt would like to see the baby. After a brief pause he said, 'Sorry, we can't make it today. We always go to the car boot sale on a Sunday'.

Well, quite. And if I say so myself, she was a lovely baby. The same uncle failed to visit another aunt (his older sister) when she was in a nursing home as the visiting time would have clashed with his daily visit to the pub. He was called Joe. In fact all the males in my family were called either Joe or George. Why they didn't ring the changes a bit, I'll never know, but the net result was that I ended up with a father, brother, cousin, nephew and deceased uncle all called George, and when my mother referred to 'our George' she didn't mean my brother or her husband, but my late uncle who had died very young a few years before I was born.

No they're not. My mother's father was Catholic, with Catholic Irish ancestors, and her mother converted on marrying him. My father was a Scottish Protestant by birth, but he converted when he married his first wife, who was Irish, but who died during WWII. My mother and her siblings were raised as Catholics, as were myself and my siblings. As is often the way with converts, my father was more Catholic than the Pope.

My wife however is definitely Protestant (C of E wing).

None of ours were even Irish. One was French and another one was Polish.

It was still officially a Jesuit school though so they would drop in from time to time to see how it was going. Now they were Irish to a man. The head honcho looked like Donald Pleasance playing Himmler.

You would be lucky to see Quad gear in a boot sale. The only decent items I have seen have been a Tandberg portable reel-to-reel machine, some B&O gear, and a classic Connoisseur record player (no, not the BD1 or BD2). Sadly all of them were in a pretty terible state cosmetically, so their performance would be in doubt.

You do see several 'mini' systems for sale, but nothing special.

Yes I exagerate for comic effect but it has happened where Ive wanted the casing off a cassette deck or something and the seller suddenly knows everything about their "cherished" item. Not that cherished from what I can see. Sods law is mostly in play

I have seen one old Quad power amp on a tarpaulin in a field (it looked previously dumped)...rotels and stuff but it generally looks too damaged to inspire a purchase.

Ive no real faith in car boot sales which is why I rarely go to one

I could do a pretty impressive car boot sale with the mountain of tat I've accumulated in the past 20 years. Even if I was almost giving it away the sheer amount of it would generate enough cash for a foreign holiday.

Need to get a bird who has a car.

Yes and than Ive got some follow up lines to play it down even further...daughter wants to plug it in to her cheap karaoke player or something to make out I havent got a clue what the item is. Depending on how I read the situation, I could be spouting any old rubbish about Dobly on my amstrad system.

I will be frowning at the item. If I play the game very well they will be begging me to take it off their hands. If the seller ups the game I could still claim ignorance but raise my offer based on the sellers "advice" :)

If the seller hasnt a clue...Bingo!.....the cobwebs on my wallet will get shifted. I wont always do that and sometimes offer a very fair price. Anyway we all know that getting a bargain like that is a rare event

Might be cheaper to just get a car and forget about the bird.

At a car boot I went to a few years ago, there was a Rotel RP1000 direct drive turntable and a pair of Celestion Ditton 15XRs, both very tidy and in good working condition. They went for about £25 each.

How do I know this? Because I was the idiot selling them! Talk about regret, I'd pay three times that to get them back :(

The RP-1000 was belt drive

/Nerd mode off/

I’ll see if there are any bargains about his weekend as I’m doing the annual clear-out car boot sale with my sister.

There won’t be much audio on my stall as the stuff I have for sale is a bit above car boot sale standard, but I’ll have a rummage in the loft and see if there’s anything up there I’ve forgotten about!

Don’t laugh - it’s happened before...

When I later googled Rotel RP1000, most were showing a belt drive turntable, but honest Adam this was direct drive, a gun metal grey colour, semi-automatic, with strobe-thingy with the bumps on the platter edge and came with an MC cartridge. I kid you not! Bought by my parents in 1979. Along with an RA1000 with graphic equaliser, RT1000 (I think) tuner and a matching cassette deck.

Well I think my turning up at a boot sale at stupid o'clock yielded some more interesting stuff. At Horwich car boot I got (on CD) The Doors' 'Morrison Hotel', 'Strange Days', Credence 'Cosmo's Factory' (never heard that one) and Beatle's 'Revolver', all 75p each. Condition suggests they were bought then forgotten. Remains to be seen whether I will do the same.

I also got an album called 'Night and Daydream by some folk called Ananta. I had this back in the seventies, and can't remember anything about it (which isn't a good sign, but it looks fairly mint and was only a quid).

Reading up on it when I got home, it seems most people were sold it by someone on the street, possibly Moonies back in 1978, and this rings a bell - I think that's how I got mine originally. General opinion is that it is total cack, with religious undertones. I may get round to playing it, or I may use the spindle hole for target practice with my air rifle.

Also for sale were a Creek 4040 and a Denon DCD 615 for £20 each, but knowing bog all about them decided not to bother.

The only Was (Not Was) song I know of is their cover of Temptations' "Papa was a Rolling Stone". DJ played it ahead of Rolling Stones performing at Maine Road. Sounded really good on the monster PA. I'm fully prepared to be disappointed.

I pretty much gave up on car boot records (you can usually see at a glance what the condition is going to be like: scabby sleeves=scabby vinyl (usually). Last Sunday I saw some guy pulling out records from a box like his life depended on it, and some of them were tidy looking Moody Blues albums. I jumped in after him and he'd had all the decent stuff (should have followed him to his car and mugged him. But he'd left or missed one, called "To Our Childrens Childrens Children" so I got that, £3.

Played it when I got home, and it plays as mint as the sleeve :) Restored my faith a bit.

The car boot I'm mostly using these days is at Horwich (just outside Bolton), and it gets pretty busy, sited in the shadow of a rather less successful football ground :(

When I went last month I found the cheeky buggers have started charging 50p per buyer's car. But I arrived at 6.30 and was informed that it actually is £1 if you want to get in before 7am. Last week I offered them a twenty pound note (sorry I haven't any less) and they let me in for free, rather than have to part with £19 worth of shrapnel. May try that again tomorrow, if it's a different bloke.

I loved bootsales, but unfortunately their heyday has gone. It peaked, for me, 20-15 years ago, incredible bargains, lots of good vinyl and hi-fi. In fact I used to make a lot of money buying collectables on eBay, mainly computer games and consoles, board games, etc etc.

But the bottom fell out of that market when other 'dealers' locally watched what I was buying and selling so I had to try to keep one step in front of them, which kind of took the fun away.

Then TV programmes telling everyone that their stuff was worth a fortune and the masses discovery of eBay finally killed it.

I rarely go now, can't be bothered to get up so early anymore, and when I do I find very little of interest...they seem to be mostly clothes, toys and cheap household tat now.

They were exactly that 30 years ago when I was doing them. Only thing I ever bought was a Marantz amp, and that was faulty.

They occasionally have them in the market square here and the tat level is through the roof. Just stuff that no-one would ever, ever consider buying and taking home. For example what is the size of the global market for a VHS tape of 'Dirty Dancing'?

I reckon I am safe in saying that there is nobody on the entire planet who would want that even if it was free. Yet these people are not only storing this crap in their houses, they are going to the effort of bundling it all into the car, driving to the booty, unloading it, sitting there behind it for 4 hours, and then loading it all back up and taking it home again. I suppose it is one way of passing the time between birth and death but otherwise...

I remember the first time I went to a car boot sale, and I actually bought a VHS copy of Dirty Dancing (for the missus of course). My mate who drove me there thought I was taking the piss, but I told him "I swear it's the truth, and I owe it all to you".

I also remember there was one stall selling baby clothes, stuck in the far corner of the field, and no one was buying. But as my mate pointed out, "Nobody puts baby clothes in the corner" :(

Yes, they tend to just be rubbish now. The only decent ones left seem to be out in the sticks...

Often that's the case. In general. the quality of the items sold in car-boot sales, reflects the 'quality' of the area, thus the people who live there - and of course their possessions... Therefore, if you want to avoid the tat, go to car boots in 'posh' areas, as chances are what they'll be chucking out will be good.

In that respect, I find countryside locations best, where there's a proliferation of 'old money' (and properties to match), as opposed to chavs or the rather vulgar nouveau riche. That's where you'll generally find the gems!

As stated in a previous thread, I was called "Baby's Arm", and I didn't mind that :)

Had to look that one up. That looks really sore, did you get some cream to put on it? Or are you lactose intolerant?

Just out of interest what makes the difference between you and a vulture? Do you not try and pick up all the good stuff and instead leave most of it so that others can share in the good fortune? [emoji38]

When we arrive to sell, around 6:00, we are immediately approached by people asking us if we have any records, jewellery, watches etc.for sale for sale; sometimes even before we have got out of the car. When asked "have you got any records?", I usually reply "Yes, a couple of thousand, but they are at home and not for sale".

And no, I don't try to pick up all the good stuff, because when it comes to vinyl I often have those titles that interest me already (and in better condition too).

"... is large, round in shape with red stripes on a yellowish background." Don't worry Marco, you can get some ointment for that - a daily application and it should clear up in a couple of weeks!

If you tell them you have only one record, a criminal one for GBH, they might get out of your way :)

IME most of them look like they have records of their own. One time all we'd done is park the van and they were already into the back of it pulling stuff out.

A few carefully-placed mousetraps would have helped there
