Well first off, sorry for starting two threads, but I may be sorted short term anyway on the Phono Stage/SUT/Head amp front.

Intro

I have a DD Luxman PD-272/Luxman TA-1 (Micro Seiki designed), now with a Denon DL103 which seems to work really well.

Earlier this week my system was going straight from the CDP or Luxman/Rotel combo into the Decware Zen.

I had been using a Sure M97xE, with the Luxman TA-1 arm into a MM/MC Rotel RQ-970BX (in MM mode) which sounded OK but a bit closed in and low dynamics.

I recently purchased a lightly used DL103 on a whim, and initially it sounded quite poor, and low output using the MC input on the Rotel.

Yesterday I have the delight of listening to a local Wammers system (gthang), who has a very nice Lenco based TT with all the trimmings in a massive plywwod plinth, Jelco arm/SPU and it sounded lovely, really got me interested in spending a little more on my Vinyl replay side of the system.

I have this morning plugged the DL103 into the Rotel in MC setting, and it still sounded poor. I plugged my Sony TA-F670ES in, using it as pre amp for the sources (It has a MC/MM Phono Stage) and then pre-outs into the Zen.
It sounds Really Really good, well compared to before anyway.

As we stand atm-

The Question

What kind of tweaks do you think it would be worthwile doing on the Luxman?

Gthang's TT had a nice Puresound Copper mat which may do well on my relatively lightweight platter, in fact the Puresound website has a pic of a simmilar vintage Luxman DD tt (PD-121??) with one on-

The PD-272 platter only weighs 1.8kg (as much as the Copper Mat in itself)

The next port of call could be the tonearm, which is a Luxman TA-1. It was designed by Micro Seiki and is supposed to be quite good for the price. It is a medium-mass iirc around 12g which I gather should not work ideally with the DL103 but sounds quite good to me.

Now, this could be improved on by possibly a re-wire?

I have a solid concrete floor so there are no vibration problems, I have it on 3 Brass feet which works quite well.

What do you think would be the best line of attack?

Thanks Rob
