Looking at combined CD/DVD/Blueray etc. Transport player

Hi.

I'm looking to combine a cd player with a dvd/blueray player. I also want it to be a decent transport to eventually output to a DAC later on.

Thing is... it must be cheap n cheerful but would be nice if it also played DVD-A, but not essential.

Is there anything on the used market that reaches this quality?

yeah... they seem to have a good review. But also Pioneer BRP's are supposed to be good too but I can't find a model. Elite's are mostly for the US, not sure if there is an equivellant model for the UK...?

The recent Cambridge models are similar spec to the Oppo and I'm sure I've seen one or two on the used market. I don't think anything these days has a 'decent transport' if you are thinking about top CD replay. You are much better running a high end or vintage CD player as transport dedicated to the task.

Make sure you buy multiregion if you want to be able to play American DVDs or Blu-rays. I will never buy a machine locked to region 2/B.

Yeah, I'm just trying to keep the boxes down so a fully combined unit would be best for me but if it has to be a dedicated cd spinner then so be it.

Same here Martin, it's absurd for any players to be locked to regions these days, thhe world is a much different place since the 90's.

It's the very wealthy studios that limit the region free stuff unfortunately.:(

My Ayre C-5xe uses a very good Pioneer DVD-ROM transport, plays everything except Blu-ray. Breaks the rules by being one of the best CD players on the planet despite also playing SACDs and DVD-As.

I doubt you'll see one secondhand though as frankly I can't imagine what the hell you could upgrade to? :scratch:

I have a Sony BDP-S550 which is region free on DVD & multiregion on blu ray. I just need to find out if it'll spin SACD & DVD-A, though it has the full complement of 7.1 outputs as well as squirting them out via HDMI connection.

I bought it new & obviously it hasn't been abused. Box, remote etc..

I'll get back to you once I have found out if it can do what you want :)

Bugger, it's not looking promising :rolleyes: There is no mention on the box of either DVD-A or SACD, I'll find the manual & see what that says :)

Meanwhile when I find that SME headshell it still yours as promised :) I don't tend to forget things like that ;)

My BDP-S300 doesn't play SACDs. Crazy for a Sony player :(
