Can you give us a bit more to go on please Graham?
What do you like along these lines already & what do you call prog? There are literally hundreds of posts on AoS discussing the subject of 'What is prog'!

Easy one... Ozric Tentacles. They're about as spaced out as you are ever going to hear. I guess a brief summary would be jazz/space rock. Their early stuff is easily the best. I would heavily recommend Pungent Effulgent and Erpland especially on vinyl.

You are having a laugh mate - spaced out Blues/Rock that isn't prog
Most of the spaced out stuff is prog stuff.

Captain Hillside (aka Steve Hillage) is a very good place to start, especially the stuff with Gong.
You could always listen to the genius that is Jeff Beck - There and Back is pretty spacey stuff.
A meander through ZZ Top's early (pre Eliminator) catalogue has the odd spaced out moment, and also the occasionally downright strange tune as well.
Robin Trower is good too.
Don't forget Jimi ;)

Grahame:
It would be so much easier (as Chris Wazoo asked an example) of what defines your spaced out blues/rock!

Audioman

Grahame : Are you talking Space Rock which is certainly pre prog but can be prog rock?

You probarlly like bands like The Allman Bros and early ZZ Top before they went too commercial

Beechwoods
10-05-2012, 19:05
Mighty Baby - their later, live stuff. Live, they were like the English Grateful Dead. On record, they were a lot more song-based.

Not sure if its too prog, but early King Crimson would fit. And of course as mentioned before, the first few Grateful Dead recordings fit most of the description.

Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush

Defo blues influences and spacey. I would stick to the 70's stuff as the 80's onwards got a wee bit more metal, not a lot but it lost some of the spacey aspects.

p9KzU-UiT7A

Early Journey is another though. Their first three albums are a mix of blues/jazz and guitar focussed spacey prog. The AOR elements only came in when Steve Perry joined the band for the album after Next.

Not familiar with much of the above but based on the OP's title, how about Funkadelic's Maggot Brain? Just one (long) track but its a classic.

perhaps they like to help?

Anyway thanks to all who contributed to me finding some great music I would have never have listened to, on the back of your suggestions I got the following (some I couldn't find in the local store but there is time yet).

Frank Marino - The Power of Rock and Roll
Johnny Winter - Live
Jeff Beck - Later
The Best Of Canned Heat - Let's Work Together

Picked up a copy of Joe's Garage Act I
and also for sentimental value Adam and the Ants - Kings of the Wild Frontier

Apart from the obvious such as Hendrix, Gong and Ozrics, Kingston Wall may do the trick.

Well, there is an AOS Spotify account which has playlists that were assembled from member suggestions. Perhaps Alex will oblige?
Some of the suggestions above will have to be more specific than just a band name though.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of actual people speaking into mics and playing records, or hi def computer audio, I would donate some of my time in the evenings or weekends if need be.

I don't think time would be the major issue - what's the licensing situation like, and is it expensive?

Well I have just listened to the YouTube clip kindly posted by Chris, and have to say its 10 minutes 23 seconds of rather boring, shapeless guitar playing that just doesn't go anywhere

Give me John Martyn's 'Small Hours' anytime.

Sorry Guys

I've just realised who the band that you have been looking for is.
You wanted distorted guitar bluesiness with Beefheart like vocals.

How about Stack Waddy?

But why stop there - go straight the Good Man himself: Captain Beefheart.
