Hi Guys.
Well here it is, a few quick thoughts about the VMPS RM40 speakers I have.
I actually bought these last year, ordered in February and delivered in April. These things are huge, 168H x 32W x 43D cm, 109 kg. They took some though regarding unpacking them.
I have heard the RM30's in the past and fell in love with them. They produced a sound that was coherent and of such a large scale I couldn't help my self, I had a big smile on my face.
I knew then I would hopefully buy a pair at some point in time. Well I did.
They are bit of an Odd Ball design, not many (if any) quite like these.
An easy (well relatively) 4 Ohm load and 90db sensitivity
1 FST Ribbon, 6.9 kHz – 30 kHz
4, 10 x 20 cm (4 x 8″) Neodymium Ribbons, 280 Hz – 6.9 kHz
3, 25 cm (10″) WCF Megawoofer Bass, 25 cm (10″) WCF Mid Bass, 25cm (10″) Passive Radiator
The layout is obvious from the photo's what you can't see is the 10" passive radiator which is down firing inside the cavity of the plinth.
The are level controls for the Mids and Highs at the rear. The unusual thing regarding the Passive Radiator is there is a phase pug (mass loading) arrangement which is a putty substance. what you can do is remove small amounts of the putty to tune the bass to the room. Boy does this work too, was a bit skeptical initially but having tried it, these really is an improvement when done correctly.
Well they were finally unpacked and in place, fist sounds were terrible. They look on my face must have been a picture.
I took only seconds to realise the level controls for the Mids and highs were set to max. A wee bit of a tweek and wow. Sat down with the big smile again on my face
Well what I needed to do now was to play plenty of music and get accustomed to their sound and presentation.
From the word go, I was massively pleased with them.
Great clear extended Mids and highs, very open and nicely detailed as I like, but with a lovely body of sound too.
As for the bass, god do they go low, I have in the past used a Rel Stentor Sub. These technically don't go a low as the Rel, they certainly had a tighter more engaging sound (or feel to them).
What they do is a sense of scale of music. I love it, a great sound stage. with nicely precise imagery. But never over analytical, I couldn't put up with that in the least.
They just put in front of you what is been sent to them, warts and all. Just as they should. No additions and no subtractions of any sort.
What to do now, sit and enjoy. Talking to Brian Cheney I would get the best from them only after a good playing period.
Will that is what I did, after initial setup I left them alone and just played music.
Well now fast forward to present day.
Still enjoying them immensely, not touched the Mid or High level controls they were go right from the outset.
What I have done is tune the bass by removing the small amount of the Mass loading putty.
While doing so, you know when you get it right. The bass really just gels, I thought iI great before but when played with properly. Well they just sing
The overall sound has changed over time (in the first 6 months anyway). They still have that sweet sensitive and extended sound that you always get with Ribbons, but they have a body and soul I can't describe.
It hits the right spot with me anyway. They my not be to everyone's taste, but boy do I enjoy them.
What now, well nothing much really. There is a small room induced bass hump which a trap will get rid off, but that is all.
I can and do have music on for hours on end.
Today will be no exception.
