From 3'15" in this. Bill Evans Trio, My Romance. Great bass there as well from Marc Johnson. Drums by Joe Le Barbara. The '79-80 live versions of this track are fantastic.

As a rule, I can't stand drum solos, but this one is good, not least because it's so well recorded. Much sampled by 'da kids'.

Love - 'Doggone' (http://grooveshark.com/s/Doggone/3oCkHu?src=5) (click to play)

Solo starts at about 3' 09". Even at the low level of quality that Grooveshark offers, you can hear how well it was recorded.

Funnily enough I was sitting in a pub in the village of Whiteparrish in Wiltshire yesterday lunchtime and four middle aged chaps came in and their topic of conversation was favourite drum solos.
I thought to myself this sounds like an AoS discussion, so come then, fess up,who was it?

Mine was when Taylor Hawkins and then Dave Grohl did a set each at the first Foo Fighters concert I attended... Great, but I guess you had to be there.

On albums, I suppose it's got to be Phil Collins on his solo album Face Value. Not to everyone's taste but I love it :)

Got to be up there, if not the best.
Thing is some drummers don't do drum solos or very long ones
Tony Williams and Billy Cobham are stellar drummers, but I can only think of BC doing a bit of one in Mahavishnu track

Not a drum solo per se but Cozy Powell's Dance With The Devil is a particular favourite of mine ;)

Doggone, that's a good solo Chris ;)

I dontlike solos too long...some live albums are ruined by drum solo's....some of the Led Zepp boots I have John Bonahm batters away for 30 minutes.

Agreed. Couple of minutes is fine.
Although I do listen to Ginger on Wheels of Fire every now and again - but nowhere near as much as Crossroads and Spoonful on the other side !

The best drummer in the world? Probably not, but Carter Beauford sure can make drumming look so easy when he performs with the Dave Matthews Band. His trade mark, the chewing gum, however is a little over the top if you ask me. There are probably better vids of "Two Step" on YT but this (http://youtu.be/KOatIrazULw) is the first hit on YT. I am not a drummer but the sense of rythm this guy and other top drummers have truely amazes me. I once followed a percission course but when other instrument start to join it is virtualy impossible for the untrained to keep your track.

Musicians in general amaze me for that matter when I see bands like DMB.

Nice !
I like it as he is actually lead instrument rather than totally solo. THe other guys add a lot just plonking away

And you have made me investigate Dave Matthews, sounds right up my street

I play the drums, my dad played the drums, i grew up with drummers and their bands on the ole radiogram, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Gene Krupa etc.
My favorite solo was by Papa Jo Jones, he had a nice style, used his hands quite a bit.
I love Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Pierre Morelen, etc, so many good drummers, but i like their drumming, not their solos. So many drummers, like myself find drum solos boring. Rather than enjoy the solo, most of the time its "i can do that", "oh i like that, i will give it a go next time im on the kit", " god it was all going well until he/she slowed down". etc.
A good drummer for me, is a drummer who knows when not to play. I like all over the kit on quite a few tunes, when done well it has power and adds so much ( Blodwyn Pig send your son to die , a good example). A good drummer can also swing, take Mitch Mitchell, never that keen on his all over the kit style, but now and again he could swing ( just listen to 3rd stone from the sun).
I have always enjoyed watching country and western drummers, particularly from the 70's, huge 18 piece + drum kits, all night they just play hi hat and snare drum, until end of song and whoosh all drums used in a huge out of context drum roll ending, so funny to watch and hear.

Try the full version of Two Step in their Central Park concert here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD4M12cFNgc). Although they play 300+ times a year, these musicians still have fun and it shows. I also love how Butch Taylor plays his keyboard solo from 7:10 min.

I have been watching this video numerous times and it still entertains me big time.
