For whatever reason I have no idea, my Touch will no longer allow me to go to Spotify without changing from Squeezebox Touch to Squeezebox.com, which means whatever music I am listening to stops.

I am certain that it never did this before........?

Help!

Eh?

We've been here before
Are you using LMS on a serving machine on your network, or are you using TinySC on the Touch itself?

If you're using TinySC and have always done so then you've always needed to connect to mysqueezebox.com .

I remember a similar thing, that deleting the server sorted, but I could access both options and not stop the feed, which I have to now.
It's on my lappy btw.

Can you see your Touch from a web browser?
If you can't then you might have switched your music source to the internal server on the Touch.
On my network the server has an IP address of 192.168.1.105:9000
On your setup the IP address of the server will whatever your laptop is working on plus the :9000 suffix.

I've just set up Spotify on my (external) server, and it's working fine using my laptop to control things.

icehockeyboy

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I had a gig.

So the current situation is that I have touched nothing, and yet I can now browse and play stuff from Spotify without losing whatever it is I am currently playing!

Sometimes the damn thing just defies any logic and makes me think how simple life was when I inserted a silver spinny thing into a machine and pressed play.

Yep, mine's gone flakey recently but the problem seems to be the interface with the PC - I borrowed a mate's Touch which was working fine before I got it but no worky for me :steam: . I then passed this one onto another mate and it worked fine for him straight out of the box.

My Touch worked great until I tried an external HD Drive. When trying to switch back to mysqueezebox.com for radio, the Touch could not get through the wireless router (found it but the IP address was blocked). Once reinstalled all was fine.

I just wanted to put forward the point that not everyone has issues with their installation.
I'll be relocating my installation to Owsten in a couple of week's time, and I don't expect to have many issues setting it up there either.

The other thing to bear in mind is that my server is on a standalone NAS these days, and all the thing does is serve files.
There's nothing else going on, and no user initiated problems to kill it either ;)

Is it LMS or The Touch (or both) throwing a wobbly, or is it your laptop running LMS that has the issue?
That's the point I was raising.

I'd try rolling the laptop back to a restore point before you started encountering

My experience as well - both bits of the above - finds R2 (for example), tells me correctly what's playing but refuses to bl**dy play it. My Server is on the PC at the side of the Touch, ethernet wired connection, with music library on a stand alone powered HDD. Fortunately foobar on the PC will connect to the same library and the internet so I can still play my music. When I have some time, and the inclination :) , I'll get to grips with it. Switched it off and done factory resets times without number and uninstalled all third party items but it still don't want to play :steam: .

I don't normally operate from the laptop, so that gets pushed out of the equation....I think!

As for the first question, dunno, I am normally throwing a wobbly at the time, so never notice if it's one or the other, not helpful to you I know!

Just thought, I will connect the hard drive up to the lappy and see if that .squeezebox thing is there, if it is I will delete it as I recall some probs can be caused by it?

Well if you don't normally use the laptop then you must normally be using TinySC in the Touch which is flakey, and you've been told so.

Like Chris (Stratmangler), I also run mine on a NAS with few issues other than the odd problem with my wireless network. At the moment I am experiencing a situation with LMS where 24hrs after a rescan to find new media it seems to then lose the contents (tracks) from some of the new album folders, however a full system scan usualy cures this. I guess as the Touch is a mini computer some people are going to have problems (no comfort I know) but my experience so far is that the hardware is reliable, the software can be flakey especially if you have updates enabled, and that a lot of the problems are caused by things other than the Touch itself ie networks, routers, hard drives ect.

Just my experience so far and fully aware that things could change at any time:lol:

I had nothing but problems with mine when I first got it. I had it running wirelessly with server running on my PC with music files attached via USB HDD. PC was using wireless connection too. I couldn't figure out what the problem was until I swapped to a USB wireless dongle on the PC. Worked fine after that. It was a problem with the ethernet card on the PC. Having said that hard wiring that card to the router wasn't a problem either, just wireless.

Now I have a NAS running the server software and use the Touch hard wired through wall plugs. Totally reliable it is these days. Don't rule out an incompatibility somewhere else in your setup. :)

though you'd need a HDD to put in it http://www.dabs.com/products/samsung-2tb-spinpoint-ecogreen-f4eg-sata3-32mb-hard-drive-74TD.html

Administration for the NAS is best done via a normal web browser - I use Firefox.

Dave (and Craig)

When my Touch ever had a SERIOUS wobbly I found that you need to dig deep to fix it.
Fix the fundamentals first then work up.
It can be hardware or software related and it sounds like you have tried all the software stuff to the point of chucking the thing out the window! :)

I found that applying the likes of Soundchecks TT3 mods etc sometimes screwed up the firmware, after all you ARE hacking in to it and changing its system files.

A Factory reset wont clear any hardware glitches if any of the system files are messed - at least not at the deepest level.

A Firmware reinstall/upgrade will clear out EVERYTHING that's potentially causing the Touch to misbehave (assuming the problem is hardware related)

Settings/Advanced/Firmware Upgrade

If theres no update it will ask if you want to reinstall the same version you already have.
You do as you want to reset the Touch with a "super factory reset"

Try that and let us know how you get on.
(assuming you already havent!) :)

The problems are frequently associated with TinySc (embedded server in the Touch).
Your experience mirrors my own Martin, it's just that nobody hears about the installations that don't fall over.
By default people start to think Squeezebox Touch = problems, and as both of our experiences show it ain't necessarily so :)

I found it easy to install and is already confirgured for LMS, just need to it click to download LMS from the web interface of the NAS. Best £67 I've spent in a long while:).

Hi Martin,
No, not in my case. I've always had mine wire connected because folks said it was more reliable. Having said that, when it was working normally, I tried a wireless connection and found it totally stable but went back to wired anyway.
Now neither will work :steam:
I'm gonna try Gaz's 'deep down cleanse' with the re-installation of the firmware but not until tonight - I'll keep you posted but meanwhile, thank you Gaz :) .

Can you see your player when viewing LMS from a web browser, Dave?
If not then chances are your player is pointed elsewhere, such as TinySC or mysqueezebox.com

If you've installed the Soundcheck mods and disabled the screen then you've shot yourself in the foot before you've started - you won't be able to see from the player where it's pointed at.

Just a thought.
I might also be way off beam, but unless you fill in the blanks I'm just guessing wildly :eyebrows:

Have you addressed the Touch from a web browser page before?

What I mean is this - on my home screen I have a tab indicating LMS.
If I click on it then I see the address 192.168.1.105:9000 in my browser's address bar.
I also see Logitech Media Server, and can access all of the files that have been scanned by LMS.
Over on the right of the page, next to the Logitech logo, is a dropdown menu, from which you should be able to see all installed players on the network.

The relevance of the IP address I showed above is that it's the location where LMS is in my installation - yours will as likely as not have a different IP address, but the :9000 suffix will be the same.
The IP address you need to enter is the same as the IP address of the machine you have installed LMS onto.

Gaz,
Thanks for that but, Houston, we (still) have a problem. On my Touch (7.7.2 software version), Settings, Advanced, there is no Firmware Upgrade option, just a software update option for both Media Server and Touch, none of which makes any difference.
A further clue might be that any time I ask for a Library Scan I get an error message 'Media scan terminated unexpectedly (Scanning progress)' - wassat all about then?

Have you tried disabling your anti-virus software and then scanning your music files?
Might be worth giving it a try.
I'm just wondering if there's an issue between LMS and the AV software you're using.

Anyone answer this...? For whatever reason, despite a complete factory reset, and deletion of the . squeezbox thing on the hard drive, I keep getting the message about losing the link to the library I am using, usually the USB connection, even if I am not actually using it, I was using Spotify.
And then I see that the Logitech Media Server has stopped on its own accord, and I then have to restart it, and let it scan the files!

It can't be anything I'm doing wrong as I'm just sitting there listening to music on Spotify!

Reid Malenfant
14-05-2012, 18:17
I don't know a lot about this stuff, but I do know that Spotify dumps literally loads of data onto whatever you are using to listen to it with. Apparently you can adjust the amount of data by some settings on Spotify itself.

I was having hundreds of megs of HDD filled with crap unitl I got hold of a program that I could find the stuff (it's encrypted) & delete it..

Not sure if this may be happening to your system & it's running out of space to to data from Spotify?

As I say, I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to these things :eyebrows:

I think if the LMS is stopping then you need to find the root cause of that first. I don't think any kind of problem with the Touch itself could cause the server software to crap out.

How stable and up to date is your PC? Which OS, 32-bit or 64-bit? Amount of RAM?

Laptops generally have an awful lot more power saving features than desktops. You might need to disable some of it and see if LMS runs more reliably. It should not crap out whatever happens - mine doesn't. Do you leave it mains connected when in use as a server?

You really must get this down to bare essentials in order to eliminate what is distracting you from getting to the root cause. It's called troubleshooting.

Please could you run LMS on the laptop with a few music tracks also loaded on the laptop and without the external hard disk plugged in? Keep the lappy plugged into the mains and disable all sleep functions. Test for a couple of days and see if it crashes.

USB connected devices are notorious for dropping and behaving badly, especially where laptops are liable to sleep.

Just did a software update for both the Touch and the laptop. At the same time I had completely removed the USB hard drive.
Still had probs, music stopping for 30 seconds, and then starting again, rebuffering too, and I do not normally have that problem.

Tried to play BBC i Player from the laptop, and it just would not see it, ditto via the Touch too.

Will do as you suggest and report back.

BBC iPlayer is a plugin, and needs to be enabled before it can be seen.
You'll also have to reboot LMS.
After that you should be able to see iPlayer in the LMS menus.

With regard to the player seeing it - you'll have to point the player at the server that's handling iPlayer.
So you'll need to point the player at the server program working on your laptop.

I'd hazard a guess that you have the player working on its internal server.
If you go to My Music/Switch Library on the Player then you should find a couple of options, one of which will be the server on your laptop.
That server will be named whatever it is you called your laptop, be it Jim or Bob or Ian (Frank Zappa reference alert - those names appeared in that order on which album?), or even Cheese Toastie.

Please go and point the player at the laptop installed server, and report back.

The timing out thing could be down to a couple of things.
You might have a slow internet connection, and the data can't be pulled in fast enough, or, and I personally would look seriously at this one, you could have a firewall issue or an antivirus software issue.

Sooo....
What antivirus software are you using?
You may need to set permissions to allow LMS to access the internet without the antivirus software killing it.

Yes! How else could you know whether it's a broadband/router problem as against a problem with the Touch?

Certain it's not broadband related, it's a pretty speedy one,

i player working ok on it's own on the lappy as I type. ( at work )

Why would/could the router cause the problems? It all seems to be working perfectly, in as much as nowhere else do I get a problem.

We could still do with knowing what AV software you're running - the problem might be one of access permissions, meaning that LMS might possibly be being blocked.

AVG, the free version.

fwiw I have had Norton and Symantec before which were no better despite costing.

I get rid of the "30 day free trial" av software when I get a new machine - it's usually Norton or McAphee, and both are a monumental PITA, asking for permissions every two seconds.

I used to use AVG, but moved away from it when it became bloated and started using a stack more processing capability, and slowed processes down.
I don't remember it asking for permissions all the time.

Now I use Microsoft Security Essentials on a couple of machines, and Avast on another.
All machines are using Windows firewall.
Everything sits behind a firewalled router too.

I take it you're using A N Other's firewall?

MartinT
17-05-2012, 12:18
Microsoft Security Essentials is excellent. If you're going to uninstall AVG and install MSE, then reinstall LMS afterwards to ensure that it opens the correct ports in the Windows firewall.

Also, let us know how iPlayer works on the lappy when you get home.

Sounds like an antivirus software issue.
Turn your AVG off and rescan.
For some reason there is something in the scanner for LMS that AVG sees as a threat and AVG calls a halt to proceedings.
For obvious reasons don't go on the internet until after the scan is finished and you've restarted AVG.

You haven't connected your Touch to the laptop run server.
Scrub that!

I've just installed LMS on my laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium), and enabled the iPlayer and Spotify plugins.
I could access both from my web browser, but not using the Touch remote control.
A power off and on has sorted out iPlayer visibility, but not Spotify as yet.

DaveK

Chris,
After our little telecon I uninstalled LMS in it's entirety, reinstated Win7 firewall and MSE, reinstalled LMS, shutdown and restarted and did a rescan of the default library (not my actual music library) and it scanned successfully in about 4 secs (not a lot in the default library, My Music etc. :) ). I then pointed it at my entire library with 1000s of tracks and 100s of folders and sub-folders and got the usual error message.
Puzzled by the fact it would scan the default library but not my actual library I then pointed the scan at one of the larger folders within the actual library (with 10s of sub-folders and 100s of files) and it successfully scanned it in a about 90 secs. I did this again with another, larger folder and again it completed successfully. It seems to be that if I ask it to scan a folder that is too big for it to cope with it quickly throws in the towel. This might be of help to the more knowledgeable amongst us, but not me  .
However, when I started up the Touch itself, it found the two libraries (folders) that it had succeeded in scanning) and looked as if it was playing a track but no music came out and the progress bar along the bottom stayed obstinately at the left hand end, even though the 'Play' (triangle) icon had been replaced by the 'Pause'(2 vertical bars) icon.
Can anyone glean anything useful from this, 'cos I can't :) .
TIA,
Dave.

I have an answer for you regarding Spotify.
You need to install the app on all players, and sign into it on all players too.
You then need to sign all players in via the server menus - go in via "My Apps/Spotify" and install a shortcut in the menu (you get prompted about it).

You should then find that you can see Spotify access on all the players.

icehockeyboy
17-05-2012, 21:21
Chris,

It isn't Spotify that I can't see, that is there on both items.

It's BBC i player that keeps being elusive.

Odd thing I've just seen, the My Apps plugin, in the plug ins menu does not have a "solid tick" like all the others have that I have activated, and it won't allow me to alter it either.

Just another pointer - hope it does not confuse further.
I have 3 seperate versions of my music library (as back up), one on an internal hard drive, one on a free standing USB drive and one on a NAS (ReadyNAS). LMS refused to scan the internal hard drive but quite happily scanned the free standing USB drive and gave an accurate report. The Touch found this library and indicated that it was playing but again, no sound and the progress bar remained fixed at the 'Start' end. All leads, i/cs etc. were connected, just to save anyone asking :) .
PITA or what??!!
Dave.

What else are you running on the machine?
More to the point, what stuff do you have running in the background that you needn't have?
To be truthful I have never had such a message come up in all the years I've been running Squeezeboxes.

CCleaner might help - cut out all the apps you don't need to initialise on startup.
You could also clean up any dead filepaths that are lurking on your computer's HDD.

Other than that I don't know.

Touch can run without LMS, using its embedded TinySC, so it can't be using LMS.

As for going back to a good old cdp, yes, I agree! MartinT
29-05-2012, 09:27
I get the "not available in your region" sometimes in Spotify. It's a separate issue and not related to your LMS server stopping. However, when you say 'it just died' do you mean the Touch itself? Died as in required the power removing and reinserting?

icehockeyboy
29-05-2012, 13:01

It then reboots itself, and mainly then behaves...................until the next time! :(

I've had my Touch reboot maybe twice in several months. This is normal. If yours is doing it all the time, I should take it back for a replacement.

OK.
If your laptop was off at the time the Touch must have been running TinySC.
TinySC is not capable of running the Spotify App, so it redirects the Touch to mysqueezebox.com , which is unreliable, and it's this that is likely to be the source of your problems.

If you look at the history of the postings about these issues on the squeezebox forum you'll find that none of the faults are reported by old hands who had to run the server client on a proper computing machine, as there was no other way of running things like the SB3 (aka Classic).

The problems all stem directly from users running the Touch player as a standalone device.
It's not good being run that way, so don't do it.

MartinT
29-05-2012, 19:11
I didn't know that myself, Chris, shows that I just naturally gravitated to the solution that works. Do you ever get the region error on Spotify?

Unfortunately not.
You could (should) get one of these http://www.dabs.com/products/zyxel-2tb--1-x-2tb--nsa310-powernas-1-2ghz-1-bay-network-attached-storage-7TLR.html - it has very low power consumption in use, and next to no power consumption when it goes to sleep (which it does when when it's not being tasked).
It is also capable of running LMS.

You do need to run it on network (where your router is will be fine).

I've been running one for a while now, and I'm really happy with its performance.

www.mysqueezebox.com is not a good site to go to.
Logitech, to their credit, have increased the server capacity there, but it's still problematic, as you've found out.

I never use the services there, so I don't encounter the problems inherent with going there.
All of my radio access is via my local server, which runs on my NSA310, so I'm not dependent on having a computer running to access Squeezebox radio connections.

It's the same with Spotify services - my local server contacts the Spotify servers directly, without going via the www.mysqueezebox.com proxy server.
I had no connection issues with Spotify when I trialled the premium service a short while back.

Ditto to a 'T' but mine has been in that state for about a week or so. I have a friend on another forum, currently on holiday, who has offered to resolve the problem for me on his return. The only thing he has told me (that I understand  ) is that I will need the system repair disc that we wrote as part of the Win7 installation process. He also confirmed it was nothing to do with IE, which might save you a bit of time as I thought 'IP address, it must be IE problem' so wasted a bit of time trying to remove and reinstall IE :steam: .
