How do i play music via iTunes on my laptop via my DAC/hifi system?

I've used/abused the wifes laptop this evening. It needed a full clean & restore anyways so thought I'd put iTunes onto it as well.

It's an ACER Aspire 5332 running Windows 7.

When you play iTunes music it comes from the laptops speakers (cr**py)!

I've got the right USB cable to plug into my M1 DAC but how do I get the music to play via the DAC and my hifi/what programme do I need to download to make this work?

Does iTunes not permit you to select a connected playback device?
I only ask as I don't use it myself.
With Foobar you can select your output device.

Ah, I think I might know this one.

Connect DAC to laptop with USB cable

Click on the 'orb' bottom left of screen

In 'search progs' etc enter 'sound'

Look for 'Sound' in the resulting list (which may open or flash on the task bar) and select, this opens a box where your DAC should be visible. Set it to default and you're away

I have to do this to swap between HDMI and my DAC. There's probably a way to make it do this automatically but it's no trouble so I haven't bothered:)

once it's seen the Dac and installed the windows drivers it should do it automatically when you plug it in after that, no need for any additional software

Well, you might actally have to chose your output device in the sound control panel first.
Another way of reaching this fast is to right click on the speaker symbol bottom right of the screen, and selecting the botttom alternative.
This will display the dialogue you must use. It may be useful to right click an unused part of this list of devices and tell Windows to display even disabled devices.

Got it plugged in this morning, drivers updated and all up & running now:D

Will try it with a cd next as it'll be another source that the wife can use as she's useless with iTunes and the ATV 2 :scratch:

In general there are 2 methods.
In Windows (the sound panel) choose a default audio device
In the Media player explicitly choose an audio device (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1433)

If you combine this 2 methods
Set the Win default to the laptop speakers
Set the media player to the USB DAC
You won’t have system beeps in full blast over the stereo.
