Police at 1am..

Had a knock on the door this morning at 1am...Police ...the downstairs neighbour complained about the noise. I don't understand it at all. I had it on very quietly and well....looks like from now on I'll be listening quietly...:(

Seriously though, that sucks - although I think sound does travel more in the early hours, for some reason. Did the neighbour not have a word first? (Maybe you couldn't hear them knocking on the door if you were playing your music so loud! :lol:)

When I lived in a flat years ago, just as I was about to move out, the girl next door finally plucked up the courage to ask me to keep my music down at night... I felt mortified I had been upsetting her for 18 months or so, without realising, and she hadn't told me before... (She was quite fit as well, but that's another matter!)

The perception of noise is greater at night. I simply switch everything off after about 10pm out of respect for my neighbours because it's a civil and decent thing to do.

I have a kind of unspoken reciprocal arrangement with my neighbour Joan, we both play music at decent volume (sometimes at the same time) but not at unsocial hours. For her that's late on (headphone time) & for me it's before 10 am ;)

I am OK in my present flat, as my neighbour downstairs died before Christmas, just before I moved in. However, in my last flat out of respect to my neighbours I would always switch to headphones after 9.00pm. I never played music loud anyway, but would never play it late at night, unless it was for a party and I would always announce the party to my neighbours beforehand and would be armed with a bottle of wine and box of chocolates as a peace offering - always worked for me :)

You have my sympathy, John. It's at times like this that I'm glad we don't have any neighbours.

You could always go down and 're-educate' her on her choice of music ;)

There's actually not a lot the UK Police can do, its an Environmental Health issue. They can and often do attend just to appease the person complaining, but if you don't answer the door they have no power of entry and if you refuse to turn it down, they only have powers in relation to Breach of the Peace, which doesn't mean being noisy. There is of course the 'ways and means act' which means if they fear for the safety of the person(s) inside, they can break the door down.

However, nine times out of ten a copper turning up and asking you to turn it down will do the trick. It may be different in Scotland however and I wouldn't want to argue with a Scottish copper at 1.00am TBH!

After years of living in flats, it is nice to now be able to turn up the wick occasionally without fear of upsetting anyone. Thankfully we now have a big gap between us and the neighbours.

I had a similar problem with a cop calling neighbor,these people are cowards a simple nasty in your face confrontational rage often resolves things pretty quickly,I went so ballistic on our neighborhood snitch she won't come out of her house when I'm outside let alone call the police when I have music on.
She has called the police at least a 100 times on everyone over the last couple of years because shes a 30 years old fatty with no life but her miserable dog that won't walk on the grass so it poops in the street. She is an old woman in spirit who hates to see anyone having a birthday party or kids in a play pool and makes trouble for everyone till last year when I verbally took her to the cleaners in front of a crowd of neighbors and simply told her she was a despicable treacherous old hag who would rot in her grave an unloved waste of life,a dark hollow soulless wretch hated by all who meets her. NO ONE STOPPED ME, OR CAME TO HER DEFENSE.
So since then she has remained under the rock from which first crawled out from.
And all the Whos in Whoville did rejoice and there was singing,laughter and music!
And the mean old witch has shriveled up and smells of potted meats.
And the people did rejoice Hallelujah!!!!
