I have a lovely Lenco GL70 in desperate need of a rubber mat. Ideally it would be the original style but any Lenco mat would be acceptable.

Does anyone have one to sell me ?

They pop up on Ebay fairly regularly Dave

I have been looking this week but haven't spotted one yet. Also, what has E-Bay done with the listings ? I could follow everything I wanted up until today when they have listed things differently and I couldn't find 'turntable spares and accessories'..

Try looking under electronics Dave, I couldn't find it anywhere either under where I'd normally look  Electronics is next to "Categories" (top left) which is what I'd normally hit...

There's a GL75/GL78 mat here (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GOLDRING-LENCO-GL75-78-VINTAGE-SWISS-TURNTABLE-PLATTER-MAT-/390407047057?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item5ae612c791#ht_530wt_1163) if it is suitable for your GL70 Dave... ;)

Dave, , thats the mat that comes with it (without the centre disc) if it's a late sample, my stashed one has the one pictured above, an early one has the 88 mat on it.

Dave, Dave, Dave..... You have friends and contacts away from this place who could probably help you - and the chap who sold it to you used the superior GL78 mat often...

I'll ask 'em on your behalf :)

Thanks lads for all for the help and advice.

I will try and post a pic tomorrow but it's the old GL70 which preceded the GL75 etc. It has a very heavy platter and an arm like gas pipe with a massive box headshell.

The mat linked to is for later decks though would do at a pinch. I believe the original had several fat ridge type circular bands.

Dave
Sounds like an 'L70' not 'GL70' in which had two types of platter mat to me knowing.

it sounds like the L70 tonearm is on it too, i would guess worth as much or more than the deck, and a nice sounding arm
the one i have was set up on a thorens 124 for a while, and sounded very very close to the Fr64s on another 124, both with m3d's installed.

Hi Dave(s),

Glad the GL70 arrived safely and your request has unearthed some great info here. I have never seen the thread linked to by wiicrackpot and there is a wealth of info there. Likewise SPS has let the cat out of the bag - the arm may not look hi fi but it performs superbly. It will only accept a limited range of cartridges but will do stereo LP, mono and 78's all equally well.

As for mats, the GL78 ribbed mat seems the favourite Lenco for performance. The older authentic mats are thin and hard. Depends whether you want authentic or not? 75 and 78 mats come up regularly on the bay. My stocks are now depleted but let me know if you continue to struggle.

Cheers

Indeed, but note how the scratch plate on the "Goldring" badged (G)L70 runs the whole length of the top plate unlike the L70 which is 3/4 length. That's what I love about these decks. As they were produced over such a long period, you get all these subtle variations in design.

Very nice Dave W and well spotted Phil regarding the scratch plate, here's mine with original mat and steel idler wheel,
note the inside of the platter looks like the L75 and yet still looks like the 59,70,88 and 99 from the top,
strange bit about my player is the little red label reads s/n: 2230, type GL59 and yet on the scratch plate it said GL70.

wii,

You have what looks like a very interesting one there. I am not sure if it is a trick of the light but you appear to have a light grey top plate, I have never seen a GL70 with a light grey op plate, they are usually dark grey like Dave W's. If yours is light grey I reckon it is a very early 70 made just at the transition from the GL59 (which was light grey) to the dark grey 70. They used a GL59 top plate but badged it as a GL70. You may have a rarity!

That's what I love about all this! :)

Interesting too how the chamfer at platter edge went from shallow to deep with most 75's and then back to shallow-for-both shortly after the 78 came along...

I'm certain that old arm isn't as clunky as it looks - summat else to play with, along with the dear old Dual 1019 hiding somewhere...

Phil,

It's the flash that's made it lighter, it is a dark grey top plate, tried to get a close up of the red label inside but my camera doesn't have macro setting.

Dave, thats what i was trying to say when i said the underside was L75 yet the outside had a shallow chamferred edge like the afore mentioned Lenco's ,but can't find the word, thanks.:)

I thought Dave may appreciate a video taken a while back of his GL70's twin brother :) Exactly the same except I had the side panels of this one veneered in Rosewood. Dave's is more original :)

Enjoy.

BTW, that arm is not just great for 78's, it kicks ass with stereo LP's too as long as you are prepared for some serious heavy tracking :eyebrows:

Great wee tune Phil, i was giggling when the jigging started.

Been thinking about my player, interesting to see the evolution from GL59 via 70 then hints of 75 with details that encompasses all three players, didn't give it a thought till this thread came up, picture of what i failed to get of the label at night and also the true colour without flash.

wii,

I think a photo is missing?

Indeed, agree about the evolution. See this bespoke 59 of mine resurrected from a tatty deck bought off e-bay. When we removed the on/off switch scratchplate there was engraved on/off lettering beneath which was found on earlier 59 incarnations. It is as if the factories used up old stock in new clothes during the transformation from one model to another. Fascinating stuff!

Ooooo...that is niiice!! you know Phil, this might just push to get one of mines fitted out with a plinth.

Yip, your analogy is right regarding using up old stock, Garrard did the same as can be gleamed from the 'dating Garrard' thread in Garrardmatters.

I MUST get the GL78 up and running now, to keep up with you chaps!

For now, I'll have to use a spring-loaded early GL75 plinth (base is sprung). There were four little grommets one on each corner the top plate sat on and the deck was anchored to the plinth with two screws under the platter, unlike the later plinths where the deck was sort-of sprung. Any idea of the size of these grommets should I no longer have them?

wiicrackpot
05-05-2012, 21:50
Dave,

I've seen these grommets before, most are Orangey coloured but some late one's are Black, the arrangement is where a 2'inch long open ended rod is screwed onto the underside of the corners you mentioned, a small nut is tightened against the underneath to hold the rod in place, then the cone shaped grommet is passed all the way up against the top plate then a suspension spring just oversized to the grommet is put in place then another small nut is screwed on to hold the assembly together, how much bounce depends on how tight you set the bottom nut, there it rests on a hole made in the plinth just larger than the rod, i've seen one where four small metal plates with indents to take the tapered end of the cone passed through a hole and the wee nut screwed against that though the plinth itself, more permanent and a stronger fit to suppress the motor rumble i suppose.

p.s. if i've missed anything please chip in, i'm no Lenco expert. :o

wii,

Thanks for the kind comments on my 59. Yours look lovely originals. There are two options with these old decks which are around 50 years old now! If you are lucky enough to come across a nice condition original like yours (and they look real beauties), keep it that way. However, some have sat in garages and sheds and are in poor nick. These are ripe for renovation like my green one, arm re-wired and serviced by John at Audio Origami in Glasgow, your neck of the woods :)

On the suspension, you are describing the methods used on the older decks and TBH I have never really worked out where the bits go - I don't think Lenco knew  Dave's plinth is different and he is correct that there should be four little black rubber grommets sat over a pin on each corner. Dave - if these are missing, Lenco Heaven is the place to ask as many folk there discard the old stuff as you know.

Cheers

Phil,

Yes, i plan to keep mines as original as possible and if i build one up it will be the later darker one, i've used J7's services a few times, most frequent is broken tonearm tags.

Keep admiring your GL59 on post #34, is that plinth a bespoke one or a Lenco one re-veneered?, that mid tone really suit the Green, any lighter or darker would've been pants, you have good taste.

wii,

I only got back into turntables a year or so ago and got a bit hooked on Lencos with a friend. This friend also restores classic cars and knew a very good vintage car body restoration workshop. We both stripped a couple of decks (mine a 59 and 75) and agonised long and hard about a colour. I can't recall what the green is called but it was a suitable period colour.

You are right about the plinth. The deck does not look right with the original teak finish, nor with a light wood. Black could look OK but Rosewood fitted the bill nicely. The plinth was made by Russ Collinson of Layers of Beauty based on an original plinth I have another 59 (one like yours) in.
