Garrott P77 - now I know why it's a legend

Received my new stylus for the Garrott P77 from ESC today - apparently they made them in the first place.

Mounted in the Jelco on the Technics at 1.7g tracking is very good (band 3 of HfN) test disc - needs 2.5 bias setting.

Wow! Where did that bass come from? way more than the Decca (or anything else I had in there) - controlled and precise. This does not overpower the presentation in any way - highs are crisp and clear - overall presentation is perhaps described as "sweet" - not warm but not thin either - bit like the bears porridge - just right :lol: There's a lovely "bloom" to strummed acoustic guitar on Bert Jansch's Black Swan, you get much more of a feel and involvement with the instruments than with the Decca - not necessarily better - just different in a pleasant way

Loads of fine background detail to boot.

Certainly seems to suit the MM stage in the Croft.

Early days and lots of listening to do - not this weekend though - number 1 daughter getting married :champagne:

These are very difficult to come by but with a brand new (original) stylus from ESC only £61 it's well worth hunting around for one if MM's are your cup of meat;)

I thought that the Garrott Bros P77 was all about their own stylus but the rest of the cart was a standard P77.. much like Audio Note does with the IQ1, 2 & 3 using a standard Goldring 1024 body.

If I'm not wrong, then we can all upgrade our P77s via ESC!

All I know is that when I spoke to ESC to get my P77 stylus retipped he told me that they made many of the stylus's for Garrott and could still supply a new nude elliptical micro line ( I think) complete styls assembly. Like you I thought the Garrott micro scanner was one of their own so was a bit surprised but that's the info I was given by ESC and the new stylus assembly certainly looks and sounds the business

I think the Garrott bros before their deaths may have done much of the tipping work themselves, but that was over twenty years ago...

I also heard that the P77 stylus was made by ES Co, and so glad they still manufacture replacements. I have both an original A&R P77 with slightly damaged cantilever (it's been curbed) and also the Mg body mount as well. I bet the Lab 80 would love it :)

Yes that is a bargain Steve, does anyone know if that stylus would fit the A&R 77 range of carts? I was told the bodies are the same, and if that's the case they would be worth hunting out

I had an A&R in days of yore and from memory the body was the same as my Garrott so I reckon it would fit. A quick call to ESC would confirm.

I think it may be little known that the Garrot Brothers name was bought by Audio Dynamics following their tragic demise. Presumably these cartridges are based on their design work. They get virtualy no mention in forums or magazines.
