A friend of mine recently bought an Ortofon M2 Blue cartridge with the intention of using it in a Rega RB300 arm.

To his surprise (and embarrassment) the Rega arm on the Rega 2 deck has no provision for VTA, and the Ortofon is too deep a cartridge. The end of the arm would need rising using a spacer, however there is insufficient thread on the arm mounting to do this.

Reluctantly he has no option but to sell the cartridge. Thus we have a mint sample (the stylus is virgin, having never been in contact with any vinyl), complete with all the packaging, mounting hardware and paperwork.

The cartridge cost £155, so my friend is asking £120 including P&P.

One tenth of a gramme tracking weight difference equates to approx 1.5-2mm in VTA. A shame a pic couldn't have been given to us so we/I could have seen how "bad" the VTA looked. I'm not in the trade now so cannot judge from personal experience..

I've seen plenty of Ortofon 2M series cartridges on RB300 arms with no problem at all , if he is that concerned about VTA buy a shim kit , it plays just fine without anything though .

This should be an easy fit regardless of whether it is an original one or a three point mounted new one.

It is a big cart but quite a good one so it might be easier to buy an Originlive vta adjuster. There is one for the old and one for the new http://www.tonearm.co.uk/vta-adjuster.htm

Thanks to a timewaster this cartridge is still available. The seller has, I believe, advertised the cartridge for sale in the Classified Ads of an audio magazine, but will still entertain enquiries from bona fide members.

I've fitted so many Ortofon 2M cartridges to Rega tonearms over the years and had no VTA problems with set up or use.

If your friend is troubled by any small discrepancy, a Rega spacer is available for a few pounds, which will do the trick and save him selling this excellent cartridge.

Thanks for all the advice on using the Ortofon M2 blue with a Rega arm, however the owner now uses a Goldring cartridge.

He no longer wants the M2 Blue and wants to SELL it.

I am advertising the cartridge on his behalf; I do not know him personally, he is a friend of a friend of mine.

I have recently been informed that an Ortofon 2M Blue can be purchased new from some internet vendors for as little as £115. This makes the asking price for the advertised item (£120 including P&P) seem unattractive.

However I should point out, on further enquiry, the sum of £115 is for a replacement stylus using an exchange service.

Though I am not the seller, I regard the asking price of £120 for a mint, unused Ortofon 2M Blue to quite reasonable.
