Hi

What is the greatest distance a turntable can be from the pre-amp.

Reason is I am going to try to move my SL1210mk2 stock fitted with Nagagoka MP100 MM cart to the living room for a bit of a play.

I've only got one input on my T-Amp, and the only place at the moment to put the turntable is approx 4meters away from where I would put a phono stage.

Plus it would be cheaper for me to get a 0.5m interconnect than a 5m phono extension.

I am planning on getting shielded phone cable of course.

So to sum up.
Turntable to Phono stage via 5m shielded extension
Phono stage to Amp 0.5 meter.

Thanks for your help.

Can't you put the phonostage near the TT & use the cables the other way round? You'd be far better off noise & performance wise if you could ;)

I could but wouldn't that mean I would have to buy a hi grade shielded interconnect at approx 5m?

It's the cable between the cartridge & phono stage that needs to be the highest quality as the signal is so small. Any noise or hum is likely to be introduced there. The output of the phono stage will be line level, or at least 200mV or more, where as the cartridge output may only be 2 or 3mV :)

I see, nice one and thanks for your advice :)

Purchased :)

 £8 for 16ft. If it's any good that's a snip. Please report back on the quality.

Hi

Well, following my house move, my phono stage is installed in my new listening room but my turntable is still safely stored at my parents' house.

So, on that basis - about 12 miles.

:D

I bought one of the 2.4m ones the other week and it replaced a QED cable between my dac and amp which cost 3 times as much.

I find it bit brighter sounding than the QED but so far its a keeper. Build quality is excellent.

"You'd like us to install the Chord Indigo from where to where Sir?"

If you have a MM cartridge you must use a low capacitance arm lead and I would strongly encourage you to keep it no longer than one metre. The lead from the phonostage is less critical in terms of capacitance and length, but I still wouldn't make it more than 1.5 metres, or so.

the Belkin Pure AV has arrived, it's 4.9meters, so I will let you all know the sound quality later.

I have a need to possibly "extend" my 1210M5G - in order to use the phono stage on my new Creek 5350 EVO amp.

While I "get" the phono cable extension - what are you guys doing to connect the turntable ground wire? My M5G has the stock 3ft red and white cables plus ground wire popping off the back of the table.

What to do there? In order to connect the table to the map - I need a good ten feet of cable (L/R and ground).

Appreciate any tips you can share.

Cheers!
