Hello, I'm James and I'm in trouble with the First Post Police already :doh:

So here I am back at beginning. Apologies to any and all colours of HiFi Mafia, headhunters, thought police, thermionic fundamentalists, and all the other good guys I've offended :)

My analogue system is various decrepit t/ts that I'm 'about to do up', a 401 that is half way there and useable, various slabs of stone that are 'about to become plinths' for the above, an SME V that works and a knackered Lenco arm that doesn't, various old cheaper cartridges that I could afford when I was a teenager back in the '70s, an old NAD 3020 as a phono stage.

My digital front end is a Win 7/64 computer running jRiver, Halide Bridge, then a DEQX as a DAC. I am 'about to build' a buffalo SabreDac with Ivy o/p stage, then will attempt a valve o/p for the same. One day. :lol:

Main amplification and noisy bits are: Vibe/Pulse, Tron 300b, and finally old AN-E silver wired speakers.

I am an inveterate tinkerer with no time to tinker, a man cave full of half fixed stuff, and by day a gardener.

Bit early for this but what the hell, half the Chelsea team is through to the Champo league final :cool:

Phwoar !! to your noisy bits James, :cool: can't help but feeling the turds at the front might be holding back, 3020 as a phonostage !!! wtf..... get that 401 and SME V sorted then you're talking. :D

Definitely holding it back, sounds terrible TBH. Still 30 years out of vinyl what could I expect to turn up from the cupboard under the stairs...:rolleyes:

Anyway eventually I would like an Io in there, have a SUT already, and will need a cracking phono stage. In the meantime funds, funds, funds. Thus looking for a stopgap cart and phono stage - possibly a GL1042 or clone, and whatever phono stage takes my fancy. I've been pointed towards the P10, also the Croft RIAA and a Boardman (?). The thing is not to lose too much on resale with this stopgap...I suppose a Ear 834P is another option though it's a sort of in-between category wrt my system I fear. Heck, I want to get my vinyl turning!

how are you keeping, and how's the ref 5? There seem to be a few friendly faces around here :^

Re the Vibe I am listening at the mo and it is just a stupendous bit of kit! No glare, no thinning, nothing of a signature that I have detected at all, it really is like the reviewers said - just absent except for signal amplification. Brilliant, thanks again!

Any ideas about phono stages :scratch:

I see your system has both great kit in it but also great potential for improvement. That's a pretty good position to be in, I'd say.

As for phonostage, i use Tim De P.. TX4 SUT into a LFD MMC stage, not cheap, buy good buy once is my mortal, been happy for years and can't see myself changing.

thanks for the kind words, yes I am enjoying my kit. It was really a digital setup that is creeping ever onwards. I am happy generally with the sound (from the computer), though I have slight reservations about the DAC section of the DEQX although I have discovered that much of those came from me switching it into standby - much improved by being left on 24/7. Well I'd like a Weiss 202 but funds won't allow, hence the effort at making a Buffalo. However I'm not sure I'll like that either now I've heard a few, at least not without a valve o/p stage. The Metrum Octave is also getting good reports though I haven't heard one. I have dealt with John at iStereos before, he's a good bloke, so if funds allow I'll maybe ask about a loaner.

But the cart/phono stage :rolleyes:.

OK - does anybody think the Goldring 1042 would be a step up from the P77 or should I just get a serviceable phono stage and keep with the P77 till funds for the Io arrive?

Musical tastes; extremely varied. For a few years I've listened to 80% vocal/chamber/Baroque, recently I have crept into large scale orchestral again. In amongst this I listen to anything from Old Skool to Jazz to R&R to swing. Pretty much anything that isn't opera or musicals in fact, and even there I am creeping into Tannhauser so that prejudice may yet die in me as well!

Tell me where you think the most obvious improvements lie? Don't spare the lash, I can take it :whippin: :)
