Saw this tonight on the Beeb and thought it worth mentioning...

Its a new book and (soon to be 60 min doc) In 'the Last Shop Standing' Graham Jones has amassed many extraordinary tales of the best shops he has done business with over the years and hilarious accounts of the worst...

Looks like a good documentary and read...:)

couldn't believe the amount of stores that have closed.

there are approx 3 stores that sell a lot of vinyl in Edinburgh, all independent and sell majority of 2nd hand stuff, 1 of these stores sells mainly DJ equipment and electronica.

Another independend is a CD store only.

This leaves 2 others, HMV and Fopp records.

Fopp sells some great stuff but has a limited Vinyl collection, HMV is HMV and is a bit overpriced for new Vinyl and you can flick through their 'collection' in about 5mins.

So in all, this being a capital city there is a decent choice, however for what you want you have to order online.

If I think back to when I was buying approx 10 pieces of Vinyl per week (15 years ago) there was approx 6 stores to choose from that all had a wide range of Vinyl (Newcastle) and also in Edinburgh there was about the same.

I remember taking trips to Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham, all of which had a large record buying community.

It's not hard to understand the basics of supply and demand, it's just a pity really.

I do believe they are on the rise again and people realise that you can get a turntable which is half decent 2nd hand, throw on a budget cart and you are away, it's a start.

I bought a copy 2/3 years ago when it first came out. Superb read and a great insight into the record retail trade. I think there may be a few additions to shop closures since 2009.

There was actually a lot of very positive coverage on BBC1 Breakfast yesterday. I'd actually go so far as to say it might really help some of the independent shops as a result, or at least I hope so!

I used to go in regularly, records stacked everywhere, an absolute mess. I'm sure he told me he went round warehouses in the USA and bought up unsold stock. This was 10 or 12 years ago now.

When I worked at the NewsofTheScrews, we used to invent stories to go to in Edinburgh, a trip to Vinyl Villains, followed by lunch at Valvona & Crolla.
