... exactly how they do what they do?

Maybe a month ago I was waking up to, I think, Petroc Trelawney on Radio 3's Breakfast programme, and he read a question from a listener who asked how vinyl recordings are transferred to digital so the presenters can just press a button and get music. PT answered he hadn't a clue but would try to find out.

The following day he explained that deep in the basement a technician played the record on an EMT 948 deck and recorded it digitally so it could be played on demand.

So what exactly happens down there in that basement in Regent Street? What machines/software/recording techniques do they use? Can anyone shed a little light?

I'd love to know - 'cos whatever they do works very well and is pretty slick in my opinion. I know I'd be well pleased if I could get needle drops to sound that good.

Simple, I would have thought.

Just as most people would do......use a CD recorder. :)
