Not sure where to put this so Mods feel free to relocate it as they see fit.
For some time I have thought that attending the usual audio 'dos' is a bit of a waste of time in respect of what kit sounds nice and should I think about upgrading to something being demo'd here. Compared to our own listening environment there is literally no comparison, no benchmark that allows one to rate their sound against yours at home. I make this statement on the huge basis of my experience of such shows, namely 2 Owstons, 1 Eggborough and 1 Scalford :lol: .
I am not mitigating against the proposed AoS show for next year - this has obviously got enough (over from some ;) ) enthusiastic support from members here that obviously think it more than worthwhile but I suspect that a good part of the reason for this is 'social', the ability to put a face to a username - and nothing wrong with that at all, I'm fully in favour.
Anyway, to get to the point, how about holding smaller, more frequent and more local 'dos' where willing volunteers hold 'clinics' and agree to meet fellow members on a series of one to one appointments, but open to other people to attend. The idea being that the 'patients' attending the clinics bring bits or all of their kit and set it up for the 'doctor' holding the clinic to give an educated opinion of what, in their opinion is right and/or wrong with the patient's bits and pieces or whole set up. Appointments could be limited to a set period, depending on what kit the patient brings in and fellow patients could listen in and maybe contibute.
As I see it, this sort of 'do' would be much more relevant to individual member's perceived needs, others attendees would still get an idea of what other people are listening to, and if the venue was licenced there would still be a social aspect to it.
As an added bonus perhaps, two or more members who think that a particular piece of their kit is as good if not better than anybody else's could hold a mini-bake off with all attendees having a vote - but that might complicate matters a bit so very much an afterthought.
All that would be needed is enough volunteer 'doctors' to hold local clinics and, given the generous way members here are willing to share their knowledge, I suspect this may not be a problem :) .
