Given the appalling recording quality of the two Adelle albums it proves only one thing to me; most people really don't give a sod.
It must be good to have sold so many copies.
I have this CD, but can't listen to it as it just sounds terrible.

You know I can't recall if I have ever heard any of her music? I don't watch TV or listen to the radio & I'm not about to play if on Spotify as I'm sure it won't be my kind of thing...
No idea what all the fuss is about thankfully :rfl:
The world is a smaller place than 40 years ago.
It is so much easier for artists to get there stuff out there now.
Still amazed she has caught up in sales with dsotm in months though.

Glad it's not just me who thought the albums are shit quility recordings, best wait another 30 years for the remasters then

Damn I missed my chance this time round.
It's hardly sad or surprising that a popular singer can outsell Pink Floyd. To be honest PF's scale of success was a bit of a fluke to be honest. Prog rock was never realy main stream popular music even though popular with male music fans of a certain age. (mainly middle class students).
Adele's album is great in it's own genre and I can enjoy both her and Floyd depending on my mood. BTW for those who want to know the vinyl mastering of 21 is surprisingly excellent.
I do have both her CD's . . . never play them and I'm not sure if I have listened to either of them completely yet
I'm not a fan, in fact I have come to dislike her rather a lot of late - and that's all I'm going to say on the matter, especially after having a rather heated discussion at The Civil Wars gig on Monday about her with a lass who lives in Croydon, who I thought was one of my best friends!

I'm intigued with your comments. I take it this is more to do with personalities than the music. I know in spite of her obvious talent she comes over as rather crass. One thing Adele is certainly not a singer that hides behind Auto Tune love her or hate her.

You cannot argue with Adele's voice and her putting her soul into it. Not my thing, would never buy an album, but fabulous voice and great role model compared to 99% of the real shit that is out there. I would MUCH rather my daughter got into Adele than Rihanna!
EDIT: The Dark Side of the Moon is hugely overrated with too much filler, and my favourite CD & production is their live album Pulse. Heresy!

She's no Dusty Springfield I would agree. I think she is as good a singer as any of the current crop and has co-written some strong pop/soul songs. Also does not rely on props like lip synch and dancers and perform half naked (thank goodness). This is currently pretty unusual. Basicaly she hasn't got a lot of competition.
As I said before DSOTM was successfull due to fortunate circumstances. Apart from it's profile as a hi-fi dem record (when decent audio was an aspiration) it seemed to gather momentum as one of those records everyone had to buy. Personaly I prefer Wish You Where Here and there isn't any good reason why say Medal would have been their breakthrough album. I suppose like Adele it's a lot to do with media promotion and satisfying the wider public's desire for something a bit different than most mainstream output at a particular time. In practice most CD copies probably get played once and end up as drinks coasters. :)

One of our parents came from the same country in South America.

I'am not the biggest floyd fan ,but i do think dsotm is a brilliant album.
God knows how many times i've heard it over the years but still enjoy it.
I'am not sure i'd say it was fortunate to be a success.
I guess it's not so much sad in terms of taste, just a sign of how social media really does concentrate focus and attention on to smaller and smaller range of subjects and issues.
I'd compare Adele's success to the (ignorant) Kony2012 campaign.
Social media is homogenising culture - maybe that is the sad part.
I'm surprised though that it's the whole album that's popular - could there be some trickery going on here whereby the whole album has been offered when people download the singles?
Do DSOTM downloads now count towards their record sales?
Does the downloading of a certain number of seperate tracks count as a whole album?
Often, if you listen to More or Less on Radio4 (a statistics program), you find that a spike in a statistic is caused only by a change in how they are reported or a change in definitions (what is an 'album' now that you can download individual tracks?).

Sad?
Not really, there are only two or three albums in that list of ten that I think have any real relevance to me and the world of popular music will always be that way - the public swallow the pap that they are fed.
There's always been a good healthy market for well promoted shite!
Paul Weller kind of summed it up nicely while benefiting from it, to some extent, in 1980:
And the public wants what the public gets,
But I don't get what this society wants

I'm not saying DSOTM is not a great album (I have several copies). It's just that any artist no matter how talented needs that bit of luck and some publicity to have a surprise mega hit. It was as unlikely a hit at the time as a fat bird who stands still and sings is now.

With a couple of kids ages 8 and 12, and local radio on a lot, Adele songs are heard quite a lot in m_minor towers.
A while back there was an Adele concert on TV from the Royal Albert Hall and I thought I'd check it out to see what all the fuss was about. I have to say I was quite impressed with her. She can really sing . Whether you like her style or her songs is another matter. Also she doesn't confirm to the size-zero-is-best brigade; and with an 8 year old daughter that's a plus point in my eyes. And of course she has a gob on her! What you see is what you get is the impression I have, unlike most of the artistes around these days.
I went off her greatly when she moaned about paying £4m in tax, but put that down to naiveté.
But in show-down with Sade, Adele, for me wouldn't get a look in. Sade is just class . . .:)
I like her music - "Rolling in the Deep" is excellent IMHO - take a listen everyone, it won't kill you :)
Its a shame about the recording/mastering quality but apparently that's what sells pop records these days.
This sort of music is best listened to on a transistor radio, not on the HiFi.

p.s. DSOTM is good but I think "Wish you were here" is better.

Not sure I find it sad, but I'm somewhat surprised that with declining music sales, music's market share eroded by games etc, illegal downloads decimating sales of cds and those of legal downloads - or so the 'industry' says - yet an album released only just over a year ago can have already outsold a very well-known album released nearly 40 years ago

I have a Japanese SHMCD pressing of Sade's "Diamond Life", and it sounds to me like a definitive pressing. It is by listening to this master that I've realized what a powerful vocalist Sade is. I don't understand the widespread opinion that Sade is merely a soft, toned down but pleasant sounding singer. The girl can belt it out with the best! Super powerful voice, full of emotions.

OK, I know I'm biased in defending a southern lass :), but from my perspective the OP's news is quite sad, regardless of whether her music appeals or deserves comparison to DSOTM. The sad part, as I was one of the first to bemoan, is the production quality allowed on the 21 CD format album - especially if the vinyl is excellent, then the recording work is not at fault. There was no financial necessity after the success of 19 and the almost inevitable success of the follow up, to allow this to happen. I hold the belief that Adele would not be happy about it either.
I feel that as Adele is arguably an artist with song writing and vocal ability, a talented musician if you will, her success should be applauded and welcomed if you value the continued health of the music industry. And she has surfaced and been nurtured by the modern system accused of churning out untalented and undeserving five-minute-famers. Had she been emerging in 1973 to a teenage soundtrack of DSOTM she could have been a Stevie Nicks or Grace Slick today. Her commercial success is a distraction and when her time in the limelight wanes she will still be capable of writing and delivering great songs, which hopefully may be less commercial, allowing more adventurous and musically credible arrangements of exemplary sound quality.
I'm 53, not 13, but I recognise her ability. Don't turn away from the light because it shines too brightly :smoking:

?
You probably have heard her music - big in the 80s, very big in the 80s. Maybe depends on your age and I'd have thought anyone over 30 would recognise one of her tunes like Smooth Operator.
Interesting that she was living in a squat in Tottenham (where Adele comes from, Tottenham not the squat) when she had her first hits and became really famous - she'd be seen live on Top of the Pops and then get a taxi back to the squat. She attributed living in the squat to enabling her to put music first and from being surrounded by other creative people who could only lead that life through living in squats. Alas, with the Tories trying to clamp down on squatting to protect the wealthy's investments, we'll be seeing a lot less of that and so perhaps big fame and X-Factor will be the only way people can afford to be 'creative'. That or rich families backing them.

If you read her entry in Wikipedia, you will see that she has become successful through talent and hard work (plus a bit of luck) - she's not something that's been invented by a record company or Simon Cowell. Even if you don't like her music, that's something to be admired these days IMHO.

Queen, what a pile of shite. With any luck Adele's next one will outsell them.
Interestingly no one has actually mentioned that Dark Side of the Moon is the second best selling album of all time, with over 50 million total sales. Whatever you may or may not think of Adele, she is not in the same league and never will be IMO. DSOTM was a ground breaking album and to be selling at the rate it is nearly 40 years later is something I very much doubt either 19 or 21 will be doing in 5 years time, let alone 40 years time. We are slaves to commercialism and a prime time New Year TV show at the Royal Albert Hall will always make the masses go clicking the buy button at Amazon, or reaching for an iPhone to access iTunes. Look what happened to PF sales after Live 8?
I'm sorry but a country that uses the X-Factor as a yard stick for talent, should not be judged on an international scale when it comes to what's 'best' because of album sale figures - the UK is not the 'be all and end all' when it comes to the world of music, just as Hollywood is not the 'be all and end all' when it comes to making films.

Did they really call Adele a "new Amy Winehouse" ???????? Seriously? I mean, really??? Ok, Adele is not horrible; but, puh-lease. Stone cold drunker than a motorscooter Amy Winehouse could phrase and swing and had totally badass melodic invention that easily held it's own and shown a huge spotlight on her musical mentors; far more interesting than anything I've ever heard from Adele. It just blows the whole argument when something that dumbass is said.
(My apologies in advance to any Adele fans. For someone reason I feel quite unrepentant at present; snobbish even. It happens every now and then. I'll be back to normal tomorrow.)

Livin' in Luton calling an Essex lass "common"!!! Bit like Frying Pan calling Kettle names Dave.;) No offence intended.
I wouldn't defend her just because we are both ESSEXATIONS (it's mine and it's copyrighted Simon), but she is a dam site more professional towards the paying fans than Winehouse (fitting name really).
Often wondered if the slurring of words was intentional or the effect. Prefer performers "common" rather than insulting "p!ssheads".;)

The problem with this list is it mixes 'Greatest Hits' with proper albums. Greatest Hits is what the non music loving plebs buy for background or in the car. Probably why they figure so highly and 'Queens Greatest' / Abba Gold have been rereleased and remarketed several times so boosting sales artificialy.
I know your comments are meant to be a bit tonge in cheek but none of these artists are total rubbish if not all to my taste. The aptly named 'Bad' only sold on the back of 'Thriller'. If you think Queen are shite try listening to their early stuff. Only later did things go downhill. Probably would agree to a large degree re Brothers In Arms (still very good) but your Sgt Pepper comments are way out of line. It actualy was quite groundbreaking in terms of recordings made at the time.
Anyway what have lists of sales figures got to do with the relevant quality of an Album or the Artist ? I don't think in terms of musical influence Adele (or Oasis) match up to the other artists that feature in this list. The rest have had a big influence on other's musical styles, recording techniques or guitar playing over the decades.

Not at all, I think it's absolutely fantastic that someone in this day and age can sell so many albums.
Be interesting to know who buys it though, as according to some folk on here, youngsters ONLY illegally download there music.

Yes I was taking the piss just a little a bit . I actually own 4 of the records on that list.
Re Sgt Pepper - Yes I am aware of its cultural significance :)

@Macca LMFAO
I think everyone with these so called lists needs to preface them with what they are - 'popular' music. Not the same as 'music'.
I used to be a music snob, too. Have spent the last three decades discovering I'd been a pillock.
If you read her entry in Wikipedia, you will see that she has become successful through talent and hard work (plus a bit of luck) - she's not something that's been invented by a record company or Simon Cowell. Even if you don't like her music, that's something to be admired these days IMHO.

According to the wiki entry, it's her producer Jim Abbiss who is responsible for the sh*t mastering

p.s. she shares my birthday, so therefore must be OK.
Hi,
Jim Abbiss produce only a few of the tracks. The mastering was done by Tom Coyne. He works for Sterling Sounds. He won a Grammy for mastering Adele's ablum "21".

Thanks for the info. Looks like this guy is one of the best in the industry.
I wonder if he won the grammy because of the great sound or because they sold several shedloads of CDs and downloads? Or is that too cynical?

Between the missus and me self we own all we own all the albums in that top ten. I can listen to Adele but female vocals are normally not my thing.
