1210 upgrade Q's (sry...yet another thread)

Getting back into my hifi after a bit of a musical wilderness.....(long story)

After borrowing my mates 1210 for a while i have just bought a s/h 1200 with a bust arm. I came to the conclusion that as much as i like my garrard 301 and lenco's (88 & 99) the technics is more suitable for archiving my vinyl and listening in the office.

My propsed upgrade path is as follows:

Vantage Audio bearing and feet,

I have an rb250 spare so i will get an arm board not sure if anyone other than OL do them?....(not a big fan of OL as a company...too much BS..:spew:)

I can't decide between the VA platter or the oyaide mat......i like the idea of the VA ....but i could use the oyaide on the garrard as well:eyebrows:

I will sort the psu by removing the trans external etc........may buy a VA or KAB or MCRU (cheap version) later.....after reading a few comparisons.

I will probably buy a nagaoka mp100 as i have a mp10 boron that was incredible.....i bought a nos boron stylus a few years back used it a couple of months then knocked the tip off while doing some "mods":(

My ultimate aim is to get a sme111....but thats another story...

The VA platter mod is excellent but in your case I would say the Oyaide mat makes sense , also once fitted the the VA platter is a bitch to remove ! And sonically i would think they are on a par with other ? But the VA bearing and psu seem to have synergy with the bonded platter so .... :scratch:

Its the VA platter v oyaide v soundeadsteel isoplatmat even (looks good value at £90 and is manufactured locally..ish).....that has me a bit stumped.

I see you use the VA AND the oyaide.

I'm trying to keep the cost down as its for the office.....but know from past experience that sometimes jumping in at the deep end saves in the long run.

If the oyaide or soundeadsteel is good then i can use them on my garrard and possibly Lenco, where as the VA platter mod is only good for the 1200.

Yes it does :) worth the hassle I feel , I certainly think its worth it and it doesn't upset the PLL of the techy .

Is it just the convenience of the Technics you prefer or is it the sound as well? I currently use a direct drive Kenwood and it was a bit of a revelation after spending a huge amount of time working on upgrading a Lenco L75. I really wanted the Lenco to sound better as I love its simplicity (no fancy electronics) but the Kenwood just sounded more accurate. Is it that perceived accuracy you like?

Good point.........i think it is :scratch:....it just seems to be better at archiving than the 301.......maybe its the Haddcock arm....a PITA to set up...never really impressed with the build quality...not one of my better hifi buys from new!!

I find the 1210's pleasant to use as well for some reason....another big advantage is the lid (i will get a no hinge kit or whatever its called from kab)....this should keep the dust out as my office is off the hall and next to the door, it gets a bit of dust from the front door etc.

...........and I fancy a change :)........

i rate the lenco 88 / 99 within 5% of the 301 and MUCH easier to restore..........mind you it's a while since i restored anything...:eyebrows:

I'm using a 1210 fitted with an SMEIII and with the right cartridge it really sings... ;)

Seeing all these modified Technics tts makes me want to move on my Kenwood to someone who can give it the love and attention it deserves! The various Lenco's lurking in my loft and under my bed might have to go as well!

My modified Lenco ended up with a homemade unipivot tonearm sitting on a separate base to the rest of the turntable. This was done for convenience as well as an attempt to isolate the two. This worked to my advantage as I could leave the arm and cartridge in situ and remove the tt to work on it. As an experiment I subsituted the Lenco with a £40.00 Kenwood direct drive tt and the difference in sound using the exact same unipivot tonearm and cartridge was very noticeable! The biggest thing I noticed was the timing seemed more spot on and almost sounded as if it was running faster but a check with the strobe disc proved both were spot on. It got my toes tapping from the outset: something the Lenco almost achieved but not quite.

Good luck with your 1210. I have a feeling i might be joining the ranks of Technics owners. :)
