Anyone watch the F1 this weekend, looks like Redbull will not be dominating like they did last year, although it early days. I cannot abide Sebastian Vettel, I just want the gorgeous, sexy, lovely sorry a bit off the topic then, Jenson Button to win. I think it is his turn this year. I know he has already won in the past, but I think he his a great driver and he never bitches or complains like Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso, Webber. They are all winging babies. Jenson has done some complaining in the past, but not like those 4. C'mon Jenson:mex:

I want to and will be latter on BBC evening repeat. This is really the only sport I watch.
However I am angry that the BBC gave up most of the rights to this to Sky (makes me wonder what we pay our licence money for). I don't have Sky sports and as I don't have an HD tv I can't watch it anyway as there is only Sky F1 HD channel :steam: no standard def channel :steam:
I will watch when I can.

We have a small problem, like a Mountain in the way, but agree with your sentiments. I am not racing to get Sky.
I thought our licence money went toward couch potato mulch soaps, so that those that don't have a life are actually put off having one!!
People like Bernie and Rupert never race, but they always win.

So it we won't loose out on this, but I think it is a bit of joke that sky have manged to do this. Dom and I also enjoy the Tour de France, that will be the next thing sky takes over.

Well the best man won and Hamilton has still got a bee up his arse...... he needs to ditch the celebrity girlfriend, stop behaving like a spoiled brat pop-star and do what he is capable of doing and that's driving like a true champion (IMO) :eyebrows:
And who the feck is that awful commentator, I nearly had to turn it off, he's dreadful.
Great race though, as I too am a big Jenson fan.

I think that at one time you could choose different audio on the red button - 5Live commentary for instance. But of course with only the bloody highlights :steam: that wouldn't work.
I agree Tim, that guy got up my wick too; DC must wonder if he made the right decision to stay with the Beeb.
There's no way I'm subscribing to Rupe's pension fund so I guess crumbs from the table are all I'll ever get.
But - rock on JB! I'd love him to win the championship, or if not, at least finish higher than Hamilton. Also, though I don't care much for Maldonaldo, I was willing him to finish as Williams are a team that should be up there with the rest of the big boys; they've a fantastic history and deserve a place at the top table. . .

Martin Brundell was good, I hope you don't mean good old Martin? I think the other guy is new. The one that really gets on my nerves, is that stupid thick Eddy Jordan. I just wanna shove an onion down his throat and watch tears come out of is eyes. He is a p---k of all p---ks and that is me using very bad language, sorry for offending anyone.

I managed to get F1 via Sopcast (http://www.sopcast.com/). It was however not an English commentary so I turned the sound own in Sopcast and used the Radio 5 Live on-line commentary instead.
If you do install Sopcast on a Windows 7 machine, set the install program for XP compatibility first. Don't ask me why, but that is the setting that worked for me.

Well Natalie, as everyone has crapped all over your post without answering your question, I will try and steer it away from 2 wheels and back to 4 ;)
Personally I found myself agreeing with something Bernie Ecclestone said today, which is something I haven't done for a number of years! When he said it's got nothing to do with F1, I thought yep, you are right Bernie, it hasn't. Unfortunately however, the media, our Government and the protesters of Bahrain seem to feel differently and now F1 is caught in the middle of a extremely volatile situation. I don't think they should have gone in the first place, but now they are there it will be hard to pull out this late in the day. I just hope the weekend finishes without anyone getting hurt..... fingers crossed.

The BBC actually offered SKY the rights because Mark Thompson considers F1 a waste of licence payers money. After fans complained about the decision last November Thompson had the gall to issue a statement claiming that there had been a public consultation in August 2011 and that the majority of licence payers had stated they weren't interested in the BBC showing full F1 coverage. This has since been proven to be a lie on Thompson's part. When Thompson was hauled up in front of the Culture, Media and Sports committee to explain himself, he was asked why he hadn't approached one of the other UK terrestrial channels to share the coverage. Arrogant as always, he answered that he didn't think he had to, despite the fact that it is written into F1's Concorde Agreement that full coverage of F1 must be available to free to air TV channels. The committee were flummoxed and confused by all the legal niceties that exist to govern the running of F1 and so predictably ruled in the BBC's favour to give most of the live coverage to SKY.
The politics continue: Soon the Concorde Agreement is up for renegotiation and Martin Whitmarsh of McLaren and Jean Todt, the FIA chairman are pushing for F1 coverage to be exclusively available on SKY. Mark Thompson has stated that the BBC will not be bidding for continued broadcasting rights for the sport at the next round of negotiations. I have no intention of signing up to SKY on moral grounds (I think the Murdoch's are scum), so I guess it will be the BTCC for me after the negotiations have run their course. I'm extremely pee'd off as I have followed F1 since 1979... :(

I know what your saying about Bernie, but the thing is they have already had problems last year with Jenson Button.
I wouldn't want to got to a country were they still do public hangings for petty things like your sexuality. Heaven forbid if they got hold of any of the F1 drivers. Force India have pulled out I believe and if they have, then they have got the right idea.

Indeed, just my humour really.... I think we are on the same page regarding Bahrain. It may not have anything to do with F1 as Bernie says, but the safety of all involved as not been given enough consideration IMO. Money, as usual has made them all drunk.
I've been watching all the F1 races and they have been anything but a sleep-fest this year. Chaina last weekend was terrific, edge-of-the-seat stuff and it's nice to see Mercedes do better. In fact their car looks to be very menacing to the other teams. The way their double-DRS works is brilliant and the Sky virtual-car demo of how it works has won me over to them. Martin Brundle is the best commentator and the Sky HD coverage is even better than the BBC's with better PQ too.
There is too much criticism of Hamilton, I think. He seems to have his mojo back and he leads the table through consistency. Mercedes are ones to watch and the Red Bulls will come back. Massa will lose his job any day now. Off to watch the Qualy now :)
Off to watch the Qualy now :)
Lucky you, I only have the highlights with the intensely annoying Ben Edwards, he's shocking :(

Just not my thing, dude, watching cars going round and round and round (and round) a race track... YAWN! Stock-car racing is much more fun because you get to see lots of crashes and stuff (which is what I find entertaining), same as with rally racing :)
Off to watch the Qualy now...
Wossat, then? A wildlife programme, featuring Koala bears? :eyebrows:

Hmm, I think when you drive a moderately fast car (my BMW can be scary at times) and you've had some track days (my last one at Silverstone was excellent) you develop incredible respect for F1 drivers. They really are outstanding athletes and have a sharpness of mind and reactions that take my breath away. To drive constantly on the edge of grip and with such g forces on your body for two hours takes some doing.
Sure, I get that, but it's not something that most people who haven't experienced that would appreciate, sitting watching cars go round and round a track at home on TV...
Like I said, each to his or her own. I love watching football (and tennis), where most people here don't.
With sport, I like it when there's plenty of (varying) action, constantly happening, and F1 just isn't like that. It's too repetitive and technical. I'm just not a technical kinda guy, and I get bored watching basically the same thing, over and over again (cars going round and round a race track, not doing hellish much)...
So what is "the Qualy"? I genuinely don't know!
Marco.
Qualifying is the session where the drivers set a time which determines their starting position on the grid. Quickest gets pole position... ;)
Lol - I thought it was some sort of TV programme!
Marco.
Qualifying - where they do single lap times to establish the grid positions for the race. This is where they are absolutely on the limit for a flying lap.
Now tennis I love watching whereas I detest football. Each to their own :)
Lol - I thought it was some sort of TV programme!
Marco.
Well it is televised... :eyebrows:
Hehehe... I'd have got it if I'd pronounced "Qualy", in my head, as 'kwolay', rather than as 'kwahlay', hence my koala bear comment earlier! :eyebrows:
Martin, you hate footy? I thought you used to support Arsenal (or some other London club) at one time? How can you have supported a team at one time and detest football? That don't add up, dude...
Tennis is cool because it's fast-paced, and full of (constantly) varying 'action', which is what I like! For that reason, I love all racquet sports: badminton, table-tennis, etc.
Anyway, I'll leave you chaps and chap-ettes to yer F1 :)

You'd probably like Canada's National Sport, lacrosse (Summer - though played in Spring - that's Canada! translated means "little war")
" In the traditional Native Canadian version, each team consisted of about 100 to 1,000 men on a field that stretched from about
500 meters to 3 kilometers long. These lacrosse games lasted from sunup to sundown for two to three days straight. The games were played as part of ceremonial ritual to give thanks to the master. (Must mean someone like Bernie.)
In 1900, lacrosse was banned among the Oklahoma Choctaw when it was found that they were attaching lead weights to their sticks to crack another's skull. ":mental::doh::rolleyes: Very large wagers were placed on these games, thus corruption stepped in as usual. (That will be Flavio Briatore.)
We learned at school that the worse case of deaths in a game was 6 with 13 concussions !! Not quite your Strawberrys and Cream affair though.

Indeed, that is beyond doubt, but is this *really* what most people would class as an entertaining TV spectator sport, or simply like watching a game of chess, with cars?
One could say the same as above about the athletes who participate in the Olympics, many of the associated sports which, although admirable, I find similarly yawn-including, as they just don't make good TV. It's also a bit like golf and cricket: brilliant sports to take part in and play (as a kid, I used to love playing 'rounders'), but when watched on TV, are nothing but a cure for insomnia!
Do you see where I'm coming from, Neil? There are certain sports which are awesome to participate in, or watch live, but just don't cut it on TV. For me, F1 comes into that category, as there is rarely enough 'action' happening to sufficiently hold my interest :)
Marco.
I find I enjoy sports I understand more than those I don't, guess this is true of F1 as it does seem pretty complex & involved. I don't watch it myself as the drone of the cars going around iriates me

That's probably it :)
However, I find that, even with sports I don't 'understand', I can still watch them on TV if they're fast-paced and there's bags of action. I don't purport to understand Lacrosse, but from Peter's description, it sounds like a whole heap of fun! :eyebrows:

I used to follow F1 every race, every year for a long time,
And then i have to say i lost interest for a while, due mainly i think to it becoming a bit stale and repetetive, with the same drivers winning, the lack of overtaking and raw competion, however, lately there has been a renewed interest, so, i will be watching again to see how things progress this year, its especialy interesting now as schumi's back, h'es never been a favourite of mine, but he always makes for interesting racing.:)
Football's never been my thing, i appreciate its a skillfull game, but too many twonks spoil it on the pitch and off for my liking.

I dunno... Because you find the matches entertaining to watch or because the team they play for were your boyhood heroes? Professional sport is full of overpaid 'primadonnas'; football doesn't have the monopoly on them. And not all are bullies or spoilt brats. I can think of plenty of consummate professionals.
You're entitled to your views, matey, but my suspicion is that you were never a *real* football fan, because when you truly support a team, it's a big part of your life, and in your blood.
I'll always support Glasgow Celtic FC with all my heart and soul, until I die - no matter what the players get paid or how they 'act'. All that matters is what they do on the park, in terms of the football that they play, the team being successful, and entertaining the fans and winning trophies! :)
Somehow I doubt that you ever felt that way about Chelsea, or you wouldn't be able to abandon them quite so easily....

Oh, I totally agree... I'm sure that someone will save them, though!
Marco.
To be fair Marco I think the passion amongst Sottish football fans is somewhat stronger than their English counterparts due to the religious aspect that is inherent in the Scottish game.
Sure, but that's got bugger all to do with why I've always supported Celtic! Watching the skills of Jimmy 'Jinky' Johnstone and Kenny Dalglish, when I was a wee boy, did that. I couldn't give a bugger about the religious side; in fact I hate it with a passion. It doesn't belong in football and I can't stand the trouble it causes.
My point is that if you *really* supported a team once, you wouldn't change your mind, simply because the team were now full of 'overpaid primadonnas'. It wouldn't be that easy to let go of your feelings.
ol68Kr-Ukf0 mScBe0s6C9E&feature=related
Marco.
I hear you Marco and a fully agree with your views on keeping religion out of footie. Mind you I got myself into terrible bother for saying so on one occasion. I live in an ex steelmaking town which has a high proportion of Scots who make up the majority of its population. I was placed in a distribution centre as a forklift driver by the agency I worked for. Over lunch two of the regular guys, one a Rangers supporter and the other a died in the wool Celtic man, got into a spiteful spat over the weekend match and much of the unpleasantness was based on their religious beliefs. I'm sitting at the table next to them quietly reading my paper and they were both beginning to annoy the hell out of me, so I lifted my eyes over the top of the paper and in my very best English accent suggested that it was a bit silly to bring religion into the sport. Well, from their reactions you would have thought I'd just made inappropriate sexual advances to both their grannies. Let's just say we weren't on friendly terms for the rest of my placement...
As for being a footie fan... Like in many sports their are various levels of fanhood. You get your hardcore fans who scrimp and save to go to every event and then you get a spectrum of people who maybe go to most, some or even none of the events but still follow their favourite team or sportsperson via the media. Does that make one less of a fan? I have been an Arsenal supporter for all of my life and yet I've only been to see them once. I still consider myself to be an Arsenal fan however...
EDIT: Here's something else that has some bearing on this issue: I'm a huge fan of Formula 1 but I won't be watching tomorrows GP on moral grounds because I strongly believe that the Bahrain GP should have been cancelled due to the political unrest in the country. Last years Bahrain GP was cancelled and yet the situation was far less volatile than it is this year. There has already been one death because the GP has been given the green light and in my opinion that is one death too many...
Sure, Dave. I hear you, too :)
You're missing the point, though. It's not about how much of a fan you are, depending on how often you watch your team. I agree with where you're coming from. Since moving to Wrexham, from Scotland, I've only watched Celtic play once, but that's simply to do with geography.
My point is that I find it difficult to accept that anyone who "detests" football, simply because the game is now full of 'overpaid prima donnas' or bullies, could ever have been a true fan of his club, or the game of football, in the first place. Also, people who genuinely detest football tend not to have ever supported a team, and would no sooner go to watch a game than stick pins in their eyes!
Therefore, I don't see how one could mix being both a genuine fan with detesting the sport. If the former genuinely applies, then *nothing* would change that fact, and if the latter genuinely applies, then one would never have supported a team, or gone to watch a game, in the first place.
Do you see what I mean? It's either one or the other.
Anyway, I was just making an observation. Martin's entitled to feel however he wishes, and we're going wildly off-topic, so let's leave it there
Marco.

So are the majority of footballers.
I could tell you how much the Celtic players, for example, do for raising money for charity and visiting sick kids in hospital, etc, behind the scenes, which has much to do with their Catholic faith, and what the club stands for and its history, but I'm sure you get the message ;)
I'm sure that it's a similar situation at other clubs. The fact is, there are idiots and 'overpaid prima donnas' in almost every sport.

Whilst I agree I would rather stick pins in my eyes than go anywhere near a football game (or watch one on TV for that matter), I did as a very young teenager support Tottenham (Jimmy Greaves era) and then Arsenal. I use to go to the North Bank whenever I could and lived on the outskirts of London. However, I really detest the game now and I think it is mostly down to the fans and how they behave. I have been on the brunt end of some awful violence during my life and without exception, it has in the main been meted out by football fans. Years ago (at least this is my perception) that behaviour was restricted to the fans and the players used to in the main behave like professionals. Nowadays (again my perception) the players are no better than the fans, in fact they seem to encourage bad behaviour. What caps it off is the absolutely obscene salaries they earn.
I go to live sporting events a lot (in fact I love anything live) and have yet to witness anything remotely like football violence at other sports. So I guess for me its more the fans I detest, but the players are becoming no better.
Having said all that and despite living in China, my best mate is an Arsenal season ticket holder . . . go figure

Well I love F1 and of course Jenson Button mmmmmmmmmm
Vettel as done it again the git, I cannot abide Vettel.
I also love football especially when England are playing, but I hate seeing them loose. I am a very sore looser.
I did hear a song once at a match that I went to, and it went like this.
Your mums a dad
Your dads a mum
Your inter-bread
You (whatever team you hate) scum:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Ha - you're joking, aren't you? They used to love getting pished, going out on the raz, and causing all sorts of havoc at nightclubs! Witness George Best, Charlie Nicholas, Tony Adams, Duncan Ferguson (whom they used to call 'Drucken Disorderly'), Maurice Johnston, etc, etc - jeez the list is endless!
There were more pissheads and troublemakers in those days than ever... And that also applies to the fans. Generally, these days, there is much less trouble at football games than there was in the 70s and 80s!
With respect, Tim, I think you're perception is somewhat lacking in accuracy ;)
Marco.
To be fair Marco I think the passion amongst Sottish football fans is somewhat stronger than their English counterparts due to the religious aspect that is inherent in the Scottish game.
Go to Liverpool, Stoke, Newcastle and plenty other English towns or cities on a match day - I assure you it really couldn't get more passionate. As Shankley said 'Football's not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that.'

That's beyond passion though, don't you think? I read a book a while back about football fans called hooligans I think. And everything they did was beyond the passion of football, this was more like war and rivalry between the area's they were from, not necessarily football. Your right about one thing though, everything comes into it, religion, area, gangs and then maybe the football team.
I think it is Millwall that is infamous for their antics after matches, but I guess that is one of may team that are very passionate (if you call it that) about their game.
Natalie;)

Pal of mine did his dissertation on football violence for his Sociology degree (yes, I know...) His conclusion - they fight because they enjoy it.

I could have bet my no claims bonus poor old George Best was going to get a mention. I do think there is a difference between being an alcoholic womaniser than an out an out thug however.
Anyway, this is going nowhere, there are those that like football and those that don't and it would, as oft said, be a boring world if we all liked the same thing. I could however live in a world without violence.

Does anyone know if F1 GP Drivers have to take drugs tests?
With all the research and knowledge that Red Bull has at their disposal, is it possible that their concentration is increased because of "supplements" in refreshments. "Speed" would be the obvious one.
Just wondering.

The inventor of the drink passed away a couple of weeks ago. So the guys might have been in mourning for a while, and therefore not firing on all cylinders (sic).

He certainly wasn't a thug, but neither was his behaviour off the park that of consummate professional! ;)
It's not about thugs. I can't think of many professional footballers today whom I would give such a label. I think you'll find statistics show that the vast majority of today's footballers behave more like professionals than their older day counterparts (particularly in terms of looking after their bodies and fitness) - they simply have to, as footballers today have to be athletes.
Also, the vast majority of football fans today are better behaved than they were years ago. I was in Ayrshire a couple of weeks ago, watching Celtic beat Kilmarnock 6-0, to win the title, and the atmosphere, at what was an away ground, was aboslutely fantastic. Never before had I seen so many women and children at a game, and there wasn't one hint of trouble.
As up until then I hadn't been to watch a game since 2001, I could quite clearly see a massive improvement in terms of the behaviour of everyone and the atmosphere at the ground, and I suspect that this is likely to be the case at most grounds these days :)
Anyway, this is going nowhere, there are those that like football and those that don't and it would, as oft said, be a boring world if we all liked the same thing. I could however live in a world without violence.
Oh absolutely. So this time I'll definitely leave you guys to yer F1 snooze-fest, while I tuck into my Sunday lunch with my mum and dad and Del.
Today, it's fresh linguine, baked in the oven 'en papillote', with langoustine and squid, in a tomato, fresh basil and chill sauce, followed by Gloucestershire 'Old Spot' pork chops, in a Dijon mustard and gherkin sauce, with dauphinoise potatoes, steamed asparagus, Chantenay carrots and savoy cabage with crispy pancetta, washed down with a few bottles of 1996 Medoc... :D
Yum, yum - laters!

:lol:PMSL:lol::lol:. Apparently they have random drug testing, but why would you want to cloud you judgement in a car that fast, pretty stupid if any of them were caught taking drugs, I mean what possible reason would you take it for?
It's a myth that certain drugs heighten your senses, and don't let anyone on here think that some drugs do, because I am a qualified nurse and believe me any drugs that heightens one sense will definitely deplete another sense, and trust me I have seen what certain drugs do to certain parts of the brain which ultimately effects the body.
Anyway, that's enough of me spouting on like some sort of preacher:lol::lol:

That's taking the p!ss! or are they? - seriously though, as F1 is "owned", are they liable for samples after the event and liable to scrutiny by world governing bodies? I've scoured the net, but nothing I can find.

"Just ahead of the start Fangio gave me some pills to help keep me awake. I have no idea what was in them but they certainly worked. At the time all the other drivers were taking them. To keep awake they used Benzedrine and Dexedrine, especially in rallies.

I was disappointed as Maclaren were crap today and Vettel (who I cannot stand by the way) won. The little git. If he puts his finger up again saying number one, I am going to shove his fingers right up is nostrils:steam: That little sh*t makes my blood boil.

I like Squid :)

It's a fascinating season as McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have taken turns at having the best car. McLaren's cars were ok, it was the pit stops for Hamilton and an engine failure for Button that let the side down. Not quite as dramatic a race as China but still good.
Far more exciting than football and I'd rather the company of any F1 driver (even Vettel with his finger) than a footballer to dinner ;)

Ha - you must not have had squid cooked properly before...
The squid I had today was firm and succulent and coated in a delicious fresh, zesty tomato sauce, with a hint of fresh chilli and a dash of lemon juice, complimenting the partnering langoustine and linguine perfectly!
As for fennel, it has a very distinctive taste, so if you don't like the flavour of liquorice, you're never really gonna like it. However, Del does a recipe where it's baked in the oven with a little cream and nutmeg, then sprinkled with some fresh flat-leaf parsley, and it's soft, succulent and delicious! :)

Lol! Del has to get the credit, and I'm lucky that she is such a fabulous cook. However, I guide her with the menu selection, in terms of picking specific ingredients to combine together, based on classic northern Italian cooking, some from recipes handed down from my mother and grandmother.
My main involvement, however, is in choosing the wine, as that's a big passion of mine. We had a lovely crisp, fresh, Muscadet to start, to compliment the seafood pasta, and then a big 'juicy' Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and a 1996 Château Cantemerle Haut-Médoc, to go with the pork chops -awesome!
It's great having my dad living down here now from Scotland, as I can now get a chance to enjoy eating seafood with someone else, as no-one else I know down here eats it, apart from when Snapper visits :)
Marco.

Ahem ;). The military, amongst many, have been using drugs to keep especially pilots on long missions alert. Viagra is also a good example of how a drug can heighten senses.

This is going to sound silly, I know - but to me fennel tastes like the smell of dry cleaning solvent. That probably doesn't make much sense, but I react quite badly to it. I love langoustines though. Doing a special fish platter for my 50th birthday picnic at Bletchley Park in June

Ahem ;). The military, amongst many, have been using drugs to keep especially pilots on long missions alert. Viagra is also a good example of how a drug can heighten senses.
I wasn't referring to prescribed drugs, I was referring to illegal drugs as in speed. I don't think any royal regiment within the air force would allow their pilots to take speed, and as I said if a drug heightens one sense, you can guarantee it will deplete another. Take crystal meths for example, the drug that makes you feel amazing and heightens all your senses, it will damage your liver and your kidney and shuts them down, ultimately leading to death, and that is the kinder of the problems it can cause. I have seen people having to wear nappies because their bladders have completely shut down and stopped working.
Then of course there is the nice safe weed, that helps you relax and kills any pain, but it also kill all you brains cells, make you paranoid and delusional.
Not forgetting good old speed, that helps you loose weight and keep you alert, as well as making you into a zombie and of course can cause you to have a massive heart attack leading to your death.
Let also remember the Eeeees, I just have one thing to say on this Leah Betts.
But of course all these drugs are safe in small doses, (NOT) you can be assured that if you get something that has been mixed with bleach or paint thinners anything like that, I can personally guarantee that you will have some major problems even death.
I could go on about the different effects certain illegal drugs have on people, but at the same time if people want to take them, then that is their prerogative.
I have a huge hang up when it comes to drugs after watching my friend die, amongst other things certain drugs have done to some close people that I known and the amount of kids I have seen come into the hospital were I worked. Any drug unless prescribed are a danger.
