SB Touch PSU from low-noise regulator and a battery??

Looking for the advice of the more experienced DIYers here.

If I bought a low-noise voltage regulator like this:

And fed it DC from a large 12v sealed gel-cell battery, would this serve as a low cost improvement to the stock wall-wart??

Should work OK, there are a lot of other options though.

Remember that when experimenting with lead acid batteries to make sure there is a fuse attached directly to the battery terminal or as near as you can get as if you accidentally short it out or something fails in your PSU and shorts the battery may set on fire.

Anyone that has ever accidentally shorted out a battery like that knows what happens :eek: I learnt the hard way when I was about 8 years old :D

Good advice Mark. I've had some fun with batteries too. They can be very dangerous if mistreated.

Also be careful when connecting circuits that have capacitors in them, especially low impedance types, to the battery, as this can cause large current surges during the capacitor charging period. This can damage connector or switch metal surfaces by arcing.

Stay on top of your charging regime too, as deep discharging some battery types will damage them.

Not really in the market for a Paul Hynes or Teddy Pardo jobbie at the moment...
