View Full Version : Linear 3 Amp PSU
Would like to build a linear PSU that can do around 13.8v and up to 3A for a Chip Amp. I am ok with everything except finding a decent regulator that can do the 3A without excessive heatsinking.
Anyone else made something similar?
I suspect that if something can be found this little PSU could be used for quite a few applications instead of a SMPS type.

The heat sinking is a given it just depends on what you consider excessive.

You could parallel up a couple of LM317T chips & use a couple of resistors to force current sharing, or probably better is to use a single LM317T & use a high current pass transistor (PNP) such as an MJ2955 so the pass transistor takes the lions share of the current.
That'd probably be the better solution as the output regulation would be better, it'd be degraded with current sharing resistors ;)

You could always double up the transistors in a Sziklai pair as well.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about :) If the resistors are scaled correctly then you'll still have proper current limiting :cool:
