View Full Version : Cutting Lathe using super optioned SL1200Mk5

Hi Folks,
I have recently been requested/commisioned to upgrade a MK5 for the purposes of recording on mastering laquer and direct to vynal.
This so far has been defined as a total set of my upgrades and including the Paul Haynes Power Supply.

The MK5 will be bolted to a rigid stand (not yet speced out) and the cutting head will travel across the platter on a beam.
The client will be flying in to Australia to review my progress and later for final tests.

This is somewhat of an exciting project for me and does I guess show a good deal of confidence in my upgrades and Paul's PS.

The client is a Radio Station manager

Now this is where I would like some help or advice! Has anyone come across this application of a SL1200? and what are the possible known unknowns that I do not know!!

Wow Mike, that is very interesting. Does the 1200 DD motor have enough torque for cutting applications? What cutting head is it?

The SL1200 motor should have enough torque for the cutting action as I understand it actually requires very little effort to cut the masters.
I do not have any data on the cutting head and beam system, except that I believe it is made in Germany.

Vinylium make a relatively affordable dubplate cutter which I've seen attached to a 1210 so it has been done before. I've no idea how good this is though. It isn't exactly a Westrex or Neumann!

I was at one point interested in make a cutting lathe and after having a demo and a chatting to the designer (the man in the last photo) about using a SL 1210.

He said that the standard SL 1210 is ok if you cut you tracks at low level but for high level cuts ( +12 to 18 db) you will need more torque and more mass on the platter.

Thought it might not have enough torque for high level cuts. Driving an SL-1210 with a belt . . . <shudder>

It looks like he is using a platter simmilar to my alluminium one, what does the external belt do??

The additional platter is a machine grade stainless steel which weighs about 4kg.

The belt drive stepper motor was added to aid the SL1210 motor under high level cutting.
I can't remember the exact figure he quoted for the cutting head but I think it was about 250-350 grams!

He suggested that a SP10 Mk3 was up to the task if you could find one and the additional motor won’t be required.

What you say makes sense. I am intending to use my Copper Bonded Alluminium Platter. Are you saying that the cutter head has a downward force of
250-350 grams? cos this is my main concern, that the whole cutting action is supported on a relatively small diameter taper especially out at the 300mm diameter of the recording. This would represent a large force tending to tilt the platter.
