Pre-amp needed need advice

Today I won a Technics se-9600 power amp but missed out on the pre amp real bummer.Anyway I now need a pre-amp to drive it any suggestions.Some thing affordable for a church mouse lol.I could if I had to, use my Yamaha cr1000 as a pre-amp or rotel 812.Must have a good phono section.

Nice find, Gary. Many of the Japanese manufacturers made preamps with phono stages which would match your Technics amp. Look for Rotel, Pioneer, Luxman, Sansui and of course Technics in the used markets. Not everyone appreciates the importance of a good preamp so you may just pick up a bargain.

Hi Martin thanks for the reply.The guy was also selling the pre-amp but I lost out on that and it was the matching SU-9600.I got the amp for a grand total of £106 so think I did well .I just need a pre-amp to do it justice.

Well the amp got delivered today and what a beast it is.Nearly gave me a hernia lifting it about. 24 kilo in weight.I used the pre-out on my bedroom Nad system to try it out and its all working fine.So stripped covers off and gave it a bloody good clean as it was filthy.
It turns out I may be in with a chance of the matching pre-amp as the chap who outbid me has not paid or made contact yet and his time is up on Thursday so finger crossed.

As it has L-R gain pots, are you going to try a CD player into it directly?
I'd be interested to know how it compares to your CR-1000.

Hi Chris I'm waiting to see if I do get the matching SU-9600 pre-amp before doing anything else.If not I could use the pre-out on the yammy or rotel 812.Shame my Technics A900MKII hasn't got a pre-out.

If I were you, I'd be plugging a CD player into pronto - I commend you for your patience!
By the way, if the pre-outs on my CR-1020 are anything to go by, you shouldn't suffer too much hardship if you have to use your Yamaha. I'm doing this at the moment to feed my Levinson amps while my normal pre-amp is temporarily boxed up - it sounds pretty good.

Well I lucked out on the Technics su9600 preamp :doh:
But I did manage to buy this Hitachi HCA7500 instead very close styling wise and colour.

Latest update is that it's all arrived and has been cleaned checked and in place sounding superb.One happy bunny.Only problem is I need a bigger unit to house it all :eek: no room to put tape deck back in :doh:
I'll sort some pic out later need to dig my camera out..

Pre amp related question:

I understand power amps don't have volume on them, it's the job of the pre for that, but if you've got an integrated amp and a dac that's capable of being used as a pre, what would you do with the volume on the integrated amp? I imagine that if it's at zero on the amp, you won't hear anything? Is there even a benefit to doing this with this kind of setup?

depends if the integrated amp has a pre in and out so you would in effect disable the integrated amps pre-amp and volume would then be controlled via the dac if that makes sense

Yes it does make sense and yes, it has a pre in and out section.

The pre in bits are for line 1, 2 etc (they are rca inputs). Stupid question alert, but don't all amps have these inputs as it's what allows them to work with cds/vinyl etc?

Don't confuse line inputs on a preamp or integrated, with pre-out/main-in which effectively splits an integrated into separate preamp and power amp.
