Did you know that today is National Bagpipes Day... no (?), well I didn't either. Neither did I know that there are over 130 different types of bagpipes around the world! Had a listen to a Swedish bagpipe which has a beautiful and softer melodic sound than that of a Celtic or Scottish bagpipe.
Personally, I love the sound of bagpipes, especially a lone piper playing on a battlement, very stirring stuff. And, when I did military training in my youth I much preferred to March to the Pipe and drum bands, slower pace I believe, than square bashing to a brass band..... guess it must be one of my Scottish ancestors amongst my jumble whose love of pipes I have inherited :)
Now the revealatory bit, I don't posses a single recording, neither vinyl or digital of bagpipe music, help me out here...:wah:

Yes, I too was listening to R4 this morning.
However, as I am only half a Scot, I did find it interesting on the different sound of the bagpipes, especially the first one (Swedish) like you Ron.
The bagpipes seem to be a solo instrument or played with other bagpipes, maybe a drum, but it has never occurred to me that they form part of a full orchestra. Not even aware of much music written for the bagpipes. One of those instruments considered a folk piece that people "dance to", "march to" or "charge to". The Eflat tuba is in the same vein, too "one tone".
If there is one bagpipe record amongst my collection of "given" or "inherited", it is yours, postage paid by me. But it was an interesting programme and now realise that there are another 129 variants to avoid!

The pipes stretch in their various forms from north Africa via Spain all the way to the Arctic....
Nowhere near the collection, but off the top of my head -
Irish - Anything by Davy Spillane or Michael McGoldrick(not bad for a Manchester lad at all), Lunasa....etc.. Loads
Scottish - Some tracks by Capercaillie, Paul Mounsey (my favourite - Nelson Mandela's welcome to the city of Glasgow), early stuff by Shooglenifty, Battlefield Band, Royal Scots Dragoon Guards for traditional military style, and countless others - probably an easier Google and availability in the UK
Belgian - Dragonsfly

Thanks for the info folks, much appreciated. I guess the bagpipes is an instrument that must be heard out in the open with a suitable backdrop.
Dave R, your wife hates the bagpipes!!! Could be a good way to get her out of the house so that you can turn the wick up for a full blown session :eyebrows:
I once heard the bagpipes played within a Jazz combo, it was interesting, very interesting. I also think that sympathetically played, they would do well in Rock possibly matching a way out guitar solo lick or complimenting one  If I've upset Rockers, sorry ;)

I called my first wife Bagpipes as she was shrill, loud, annoying and hard to be in a small room with.
Q: Do you know what the major difference is between an onion and a set of bag pipes?
A: No one cry's when you cut up a set of bag pipes!
Enjoy!

 Jeff mate, you've just made a misty dull English Monday morning a brighter day :)
Love the bit about the ex-wife, wish I had thought of it for my ex whom I refer to as 'Chicken Tits', don't ask me why :eyebrows: Has anyone else got an ex who has been lovingly, or otherwise, been renamed ?????

Did anyone see the Sonny Rollins set at Ronnie Scott's in 1974 on BBC4 a few weeks ago? Rufus Harley played Jazz Bagpipes :mental:, and was suitably attired in a kilt.
Fast forward the YouTube video (http://youtu.be/-7WMwzj4Mbc) to 9'10" and, er, "enjoy"
