MartinT has gone and given me the hots to try out a mains regenerator doodad, as some may have seen in recent classifieds thread.

Someone PMed me the suggestion of these UPS machines - they've got fans but claim to be quiet ... :scratch:

They are also much cheaper than the audiophool equivalents. ;)

Be very careful with regenerators/UPSs not designed for hi-fi, Jerry. Many of them generate a squarewave or not very accurate sinewave (because computers don't care) which would be disastrous for your system sound. Definitely try before you buy!

You can pick up a PS Audio PPP for around £700-800 (I just sold mine for that), and that's legitimate low distortion mains sinewave, with multiwave if you like it. Mind you, finding a UK one is a challenge.

I just checked the spec of that UPS, Jerry. <3% THD output is not good, my incoming mains is only about 2%. Regenerated mains from the PPP was 0.7%.

Ah well ... once an audiophool, always an audiophool, I guess. :doh:

A PS Audio Power Plant Premier has come up on fleaBay with a not too unreasonable Buy It Now (no, sadly rather more than the price I know another one went for on the forum. :( ... but that did strike me as being extremely cheap!)

Hopefully it will be with me in a few days. :)

I've always been very pleased with my PPP since I bought it s/h.

I know there have been some reports of reliability issues, but mine has behaved perfectly, and I love the way it's a 'fit and forget' item that just quietly makes sure your system sounds it's best regardless of the time of day etc.

I'm sure the new beast from PS Audio is great, but personally I'm glad the PPP doesn't take as much rack space!

I'm currently heaving it into position. Bloody heavy, and have to readjust all the springs!

When I traded my PPP against a P5, I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that the P5 is more compact than its predecessor. The P10 is quite another matter, though!
