Just spotted these new Onkyo amplifiers in the tone audio mag.

They look very cool:

It is worth looking at the Nikko and NEC range as well. Unfortunately those kind of amps were mainly sold in Japan and the US. So us poor Europeans can only dream about owning such classics.

Gorgeous !! Would love to see the full set all racked up tall like back in the day (Topped off with my MK5g modded to within an inch of it's life with Cadenza Black or similar cartridge at the helm) :smoking:

You've just gotta love the VU meters.

The previews I've read of this new Onkyo kit, sound fairly optimistic.

Only heard it briefly with Kef 205/2's. Sounded good, plenty of punch and detail, more of a Bryston/Audiolab presentation, and a bit expensive IMO.

The Vu meters are lovely though, dancing away!

Others here would know Onkyo far better than I do, but I reckon a goodly chunk of their product was actually rather good, and better than the "popular" competition at the time.

Their NEW Reference range - 70s inspired but not actually 70s. ...and who doesn't love VU meters? I'm clearing out some gear at the moment, but I can't bear to part with my 70's Sony, even though it is probably the worst sounding amp I own!

Nom nom nom.
I do like Onkyo stuff. Not the caché of half the stuff you see in this these forums but at the top end looks stylish and a lot of bang for your buck. A bit like a top end Giant mountain bike.

Yes it is quite lovely approaching Mcintosh levels of prettyness.

Yep, I think they look fecking awesome!

Personally I wish we got more of the real hi-end Japanese stuff over here so it would pop up s/h more often....

Actually, given the general quality of serious high-end Japanese gear, I actually DO think they will be good value at £2.5k

Do you think?

No - even as one who loathes power meters on amplifiers (they serve no real pupose and are distracting), I have to confess the external cosmetics of Onkyo amp shows far better styling than the rather vulgar McIntosh's.

Problem is, how many decent dealers are going to stock this amp? Quick google search shows only a couple of dealers where you could demo it against the more "esoteric" hi-fi brands ...
