EL34 vs EL84

OK so for just about a year now I have been using an Icon Audio Stereo 20 PP EL84 powered amplifier and although I am almost totally happy with its midrange sounds especially guitar, I am a little concerned by just 15 Watts per channel. If I were to change to an EL34 powered amplifier I would get around 35 Watts per channel and the glorious EL34 midrange which I am already familiar with. My current speakers are around 89db/W/m and the whole sound is really good and as stated, I am almost totally satisfied with it but there is just this little bit of doubt.

What worries you about the output power? Do you feel the amp is struggling with your speakers?

I don't really feel there is a mismatch problem and the sound is really good but you know, its just 15 Watts isn't it...? I'd much rather spend money on a really good DAC to improve the source.

Output power is not the problem, it's how efficient and how hard a load your speakers are. A quarter watt per channel amp will blow you out of your chair if the speakers are efficient enough. If you're not detecting any signs of the amp clipping at your preferred listening levels then I wouldn't worry about it.

At the last Owston DIY meet, we were listening to some 2A3 PP amps at about 2w/ch, driving some speakers using full range drivers. Sounded superb and filled a large room with ease. I'd say the room is about 15 by 25m or so.

Don't let the low price put you off, it's very good. Saw off one of the new MF dacs in my system.

I would say, from my limited experience of amps I've owned, that the EL84 has a better midrange even than the EL34. If you can live with the lower power, stick with it.

EL84 = musically interesting
EL34 = Bland & dreary

Simples. :)

OK, I know, it's all about the implementation and the design of the circuit they are embedded in ... NOT! :eyebrows:
