Once upon a time there was Windows XP and hidden away beneath a heap of audio management layers were the WDM drivers.
Around the file based audio world people bashed and crashed Windows XP trying to access WDM drivers in the pursuit of bit perfect replay and swore at Microsoft and all the evils they inflicted on the file audio enthusiast.
One day a man called Michael Tippach forged a mighty weapon to combat the Microsoft audio evils and delivered it free to all and the file audio enthusiasts were able to vanquish the evil audio management layers and the audio enthusiasts were happy and music at native bit depth was set free.

Most of us interested in file based audio have used Michaels mighty weapon against the evil Microsoft audio layers and while Microsoft may have relented concerning their evil incarceration and enabled the setting free of WDM we, the file based audio enthusiasts owe Michael a great debt. He has probably contributed more to the improvement and development of file based audio than any other single person I can think of.
