500 CDs Ripped to Flac!

Celebrate with me the fact that tonight I completed ripping my rather dated CD collection to FLAC, now all safely backed up and ready for streaming. Started back in November and I've just been grabbing a handful every so often. Nearly 200GB worth, and approx 6000 files.

Just thought i'd share this with some who'd appreciate the effort!:cool:

Well done - I feel your pain as I did mine last year. (3,000 odd, 0.97TB) - not something you will want to do again, so take my advice and keep a 3rd backup off-site somewhere... just in case...

Fastidious with regard to tagging, my ripping programme (a combination of Media Monkey and FreeRip) found around 85% of titles, the rest i had to source and enter myself!

I've not sourced album artwork and stuff as that holds no benefit for me, the trickiest ones to sort being some of my old techno compliations from early 90s.

Yes a third backup offsite seems a good idea and think I'll be getting a cheap usb HD for this purpose soon.

I was looking at getting a squeezebox once. Then I realised the tagging it used wasn't fully compatible with Foobar, specifically around Genre, there were other differences too. As you change your players over time there's no guarantee you won't have some fixing to do. The naming should be ok though but I find some download tracks have only single digit numbers, this can mess up the play order. It's all done to give us something to to do!

I find that if you include the track number in the file name then the track tags being single digit does not matter, for example "02 - Over The Hill".

To be more precise, this aspect isn't exactly tagging.....it's actually the filename where the problem exists. The track downloads as "2 - Over The Hill" not "02 - Over The Hill".

When ripping CDs I use dbPoweramp set up to give two digit track numbers in the filename, and single digit (where appropriate) in the tags, so I get the best of both worlds.

I have my ripping setup fine. It's not an option when downloading from HDtracks :)

They don't check their tags properly.
I usually make amendments to their tags, and then scan the files to produce Replaygain tags, as once in a while I'll set the Squeezebox off on a random play, and with the disparity in levels from track to track it makes me comfortable to know that I won't be having my drivers trying to push past their endstops :eyebrows:

I've still got 116 classical CDs to do before I finally finish ripping, tagging and downloading cover art to complete my collection of 2,933 CDs (36,624 tracks/1,188 artists). It's taken the best part of 5 years with two false starts - I started just ripping for portable use and blindly ripped the first few hundred CDs to 128kbps AAC files. I then realised that the sound quality even through my iPod was poor, so re-ripped as 320bps MP3. I then started using files as a hi-fi source, so started all over again this time ripping to FLAC.

I have the playing copy on my server, a 'working' copy on my desktop PC, a copy on a USB hdd and an off-site copy that I update monthly. I also have a parallel library converted to 256 vbr MP3 files for phone/portable use (and an off-site copy of this).
