JG Windows used to be good for vinyl but these days focuses more on classical and jazz CDs.

I used to buy a bit from Altvinyl (http://www.altvinyl.com/index.asp) which was close to Central Station (fairly central), but they've now closed their shop front (same address on the website). They have their own label and have an interesting selection of new and used material on vinyl and CD (depends on your tastes of course). I'd give them a call as they may help you out.

Nowadays, when buying from a shop in N'cle, I get most of my vinyl from Reflex (they stock some interesting stuff, rock indie, reissues mainly) and a little from HMV on Northumberland St, which is very central.

Windows seem to be stocking a little vinyl these days but not worth a detour IMHO.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm now back from Newcastle and rather sadly only managed to get to beatdownrecords which I have to say is an excellent shop. To get to the vinyl you have to go into a secret back room which makes it all the more special as you feel that its a members only invite to enter the inner sanctum of the 12" :lol: They carry a great selection of records must have been about 1-2000 to choose from and a fantastic range of new releases. I left with several new slabs of 12". I can also recommend the Sunday market down by the Quayside. I think I managed to liberate another 7 albums for £30, so in total I've managed to add another 9 titles to my collection. i managed to pick up some early NWOBHM, and various other bits and pieces. I'll try and check the other places out if I go again. ;)

Pleased to hear you had a decent time Andrew, the backroom at Beat Down Records is quite special... had it all to myself the other day whilst on a lunch break, just as well I'd left wallet at work and only had pocket change!

Of all the things it never occurred to me to browse for vinyl at the quayside market, think i'll pop out with the bike on sunday morning and have a look!

If you're ever back in the NE then I'd also recommend the market at Tynemouth Metro station on a sunday afternoon, lots of retro stuff and a few record sellers down there too. Besides its a good excuse for a paper of fish n chips and a bracing walk along the coast.

Nice! To be honest the Quayside thing was a complete and utter surprise. Me and the other 1/2 just decided to go down and have a mosy around and hey-ho we find a load of Vinyl :D I can heartily recommend Nottingham if you fancy buying some vinyl, I have posted a thread somewhere on AOS about my findings. I'd avoid chesterfield. Leeds is also quite good. If I'm in the NE again then I'll do a little more research and hopefully find some of the more elusive vinyl emporium's. :)

PS There is a guy with a black beard on the Quayside who sells some nicely priced vinyl. He'll also knock a bit off if you ask nicely ;)

just come back from a walk around the toon popped into reflex and steel wheels, liberated a couple of Santana lp's and Terence trent D'arby "the hard line according to..." must admit i've always liked steel wheels and there no nonsense approach to pricing the vinyl, which usually has the guy giving the vinyl the once over before saying either £4 or a fiver, love it:eyebrows:

Yes, Reflex seems to have quite a bit of new vinyl in these days... 180g pressings (not cheap)... I've always had a soft spot for them.. just the other day i picked up a new cd by this chap wHyalVRUXrA for only 3.99

also briefly popped by RPM records on High Bridge Street the other day, seems to have lots of used vinyl in there and not too badly priced... Its tucked away in the little alleyway behind the Duke of Wellington pub.

Aware we should have a catch up soon Mike but the next few weekends I'll be doon me allotment trying to stay away from hifi and be more outdoors-ey... Its a ruddy tip!
