Your thoughts: Speaker versus Room Size

I'm using ported 2-Way speakers with Scan-Speak drivers (woofer is 6.5" 18W/8531G) in a room that's 12' x 21 feet. The speakers are on the long wall so I'm about 8.5 feet from the baffles. The room has good acoustics due to soft furniture, carpet, dimensions, etc.

While these speakers sound very good - and have decent bass - I've often wondered whether a 3-Way with a larger woofer (e.g. 10") would bring more substance to the music. That is, I'm thinking a 3-Way will allow orchestral symphonies to sound more life-like than can be achieved with a small speaker. The type of speaker I'm thinking of would be similar to Troel Gravesen's Jensen DIY {http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Jensen.htm}.

However, I'm also wondering if a larger speaker will be too much for the relatively small room.

My room is only 4m x 3.5m and I uses 2 x15" drivers in open baffles without any room issues what so ever so think it will depend on room layour

12' by 21' is classed as larger than average in the UK - its a pretty decent room size. You could easily get a 3 way in there it would sound fine as long as you don't cram them in the corners or behind the settee :;

That's 252 sq foot, you should just about squeeze a jensen in there, but a DTQWT will fit very nicely.

A nice 2 way may work well.
I never liked a 3 way x over, they break up the midrange to much for my liking, the only one I ever heard that seemed to sound right was a very expensive pair of 3 way Harbeth's .
I would look at the Lore S for Orchestral on a budget the M lore. If you have the money Pendragons.

Could? How much is really the question?
Look at a 2 way with more dynamics and deeper bass,even the Pendragon is a 2 way crossover and it has been described as both a butterfly and a sledgehammer.
There is nothing subtle about a kettle drum or a violin in a live orchestra. Been there heard it, it fills the room and at times vibrates the walls.
