XBMC on Mint

Hi all, just thought I would mention XBMC. For those not aware of it, I used to run Boxee but that is now no longer supported so I have this now instead and I have to say I am very impresed! It can be installed on almost any platform and looks great. As yet I have only used it on the PC running Mint Linux (Lisa) but it would be great on a small HTPC with a remote. Anyway, here is a link, I hope it is useful to someone.

Hi Steve,

I run XBMC on Ubuntu and love it. The current beta (3) of Eden - the forthcoming release - is very stable and runs well even on the very old low-spec PC that I use. I only use it for music, so I suspect that video duties may require a better spec.

The old 'live' cd has now been replaced with XBMCbuntu which includes a lightweight desktop and web browser and would be a good thing for any Linux newbies to check out as a pain-free way to move over to a Linux-based player.

Hi Keith. I am seriously considering building a music PC based on Linux/XBMC. I would use a small SSD for the OS and it wouldn't need a drive.

I would like it to be remote too.

I'm awaiting the Raspberry Pi with bated breath - orders probably taken later today, I believe.

There's Raspbmc - a minimal Linux distribution (based on Lubuntu) with xbmc that should be ready soon which should make for a cool streamer. Add an android tablet like the cheap £60 one Dabs do to run xbmc remote app and linear 5v psu (and maybe galvanic isolation on the usb for the dac.

Got it on top of Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop and when I stop messing about with the skins it sounds excellent. :)

Oh arr, seem to be having a few problems getting my remote mouse to use all its functions :(

You should be able to get it working by editing keyboard.xml

XBMC is far more format friendly than iTunes - re the wireless mouse - we(even the kids) use XBMC running off a mac mini(2011 w HDMI out) and a wireless bluetooth keyboard - really no need for a mouse (if you have an iPod/phone pad whatever.. they have a great XBMC remote app that negates any input device other than itself)
